re: GA-Z68XP-UD4 (rev1.0) Install, Bios and Test procedures with Questions.

Outline of my Build, Bios and Test procedures:

    1. General preparation.
    • Upon Delivery cross check all parts are correct according to manufacture specifications.
    • Inspect Motherboard CPU socket with magnifying glass for possible bent pins. (Will post high res pic if I have doubts.)
    • Download Latest Bios from Gigabyte website

    Question:
There are 2 pre install driver packages available (as in installed via F6 during WIn 7 OS install) Is it reccommended to do this or not? I am not intending to have a raid setup and will be using AHCI in Bios setting. And what about all the other driver packages? F6 method or after install?

    -
    • Back Up all data from existing Western Digital HDD to a borrowed External 1TB drive and Format (any formating comments welcome)
This HDD will be used for game and other large programme installs, general storage will be on another not yet purchased HDD

2.Prepare SSD install for OS only.
    • SSD 60Gb is to be used as OS as in this thread

    • Check for Firmware update and update if necessary. Question: Bios should be in IDE mode for firmware update??

    • 4k allignment during OS install any thoughts on this vid

    3. Bench Setup of Mobo, Ram, PSU, Monitor, keyboard GPU (if needed).

    -

Prof Jims procedure If he would use if building a new system:
    _
    • Install only one memory module.

    • Load optimized bios settings.

    • Boot into the bios and let it sit for 30 minutes to ensure that the system is stable.

    And not use @BIOS
    • Power off the system, unplug the power supply and press/hold the front panel on/off switch for 10 seconds.

    • Install the second memory module. You might need to make some minor bios tweaks.

    • Boot using an Memtest86+ (version 4.x) bootable usb or optical drive.

    • Run 10 or more full test loops, the default setting is to run tests #1 - #8.

    • If there are no errors, run Memtest86+ test #5 for 10 loops by pressing: c 1 3 5 enter 0 (zero key)

    • Install the operating system.

    • Run IBT (IntelBurnTest) or Linx x64 for ONLY 5 full loops using all available memory.

    • Run each of the Prime95 tests (Blend, Small FFT and Large FFT) for at least 6 - 8 hours each, one at a time.

    • Run the most demanding video game that you have for several hours.

During writing this post all my parts have arrived except for the GPU, I guess I will see how my onboard HDMI graphics work!

Please comment on any of the above espicially the CL8 timing version of my corsair vengeance CL9 timing modules.

    Thanks.

re: GA-Z68XP-UD4 (rev1.0) Install, Bios and Test procedures with Questions.

It's my understanding that there is little advantage to running with lower latency memory (e.g. CL8) with your system. It appears that running with higher memory speeds is best, and that using tighter memory timings doesn't really improve performance with today's systems. I'll let others who are running with higher speed DDR3 memory correct me if I'm wrong.

It sounds like you'll have a half-fast system until your new video card arrives.

      Have fun!!

Can't say I'm confident with that statement. Can you please elaborate.

re: GA-Z68XP-UD4 (rev1.0) Install, Bios and Test procedures with Questions.

Some newer bios versions are significantly larger than the bios that came with the motherboard. In this case, Q-Flash can't be used to update the larger bios file. Once you use @BIOS to flash the larger bios file size, you can then use Q-Flash for subsequent bios flashing.
            Don't worry, be happy ;)

There should be an @BIOS chapter in your motherboard user manual.
You might find additional information by doing a web search, such as: @bios tutorial

When using @bios make sure you place a check in the box for Clear DMI data. It should be on the first screen in @bios.

I bit more then idle 30 minutes in BIOS is recommended if you are going to flash, run a pass of memtest86+.

re: GA-Z68XP-UD4 (rev1.0) Install, Bios and Test procedures with Questions.

Yes, I would run the Memtest86+ tests with only one memory module installed BEFORE flashing the bios (if necessary). I would probably "cheat" a bit and run 4 Memtest86+ full loops followed by the 10 loop #5 test.

You should repeat both tests after you've installed the second memory module to help ensure that your system is "reasonably" stable. I always perform bios flashing with a proven stable, optimized bios profile with stock, non-overclocked settings.

                            Bios Version is F2.

                            Will need to flash.

Curently idle in Bios (F2) now with 2 sticks of Ram and running Memtest as per my 2nd post step number 3.

Will post back once memtesting is complete.
