Gaming monitor questions

I'm building a system (almost exclusively for gaming) and I currently have a Samsung B2330 23" monitor. Was looking at the Dell U2711 which has a great resolution(2560 X 1440), but now I'm hearing that resolution is less important than response and refresh times for gaming. Does anyone have any opinions on the current crop of 27" monitors from Asus, Samsung and others. I'm starting to get confused about TN monitors vs IPS monitors, 60 Hz vs 120 Hz, resolution vs refresh and response rates and things like that I'm running a MSI GTX 560 Ti GPU. Thanks,

Have you checked out Three 27" IPS LCDs: UltraSharp U2711, DS-277W, And MultiSync PA271W : 27" IPS LCD Roundup: Dell, DoubleSight, And NEC?
It might help if you read end-user reviews from sites like Newegg, Amazon, and others.
You can save a lot of time if you use your browser's search feature and only read posts that contain gaming or game.

It's my understanding that with a high resolution monitor (e.g. 2560 X 1440) you can lower some gaming presets for better performance without sacrificing quality. If I'm wrong about this I sure that someone on the forum will correct me ;)

Yeah, I had read a slew of reviews and had visited the Tom's Hardware site. As much as I hate to say it, sometimes I get more confused the more reading or researching I do. Thanks for the links, the one article reviewing the three IPS monitors had not come up in my previous searches. Thanks again for taking the time to respond, I'm always amazed at the knowledge and willingness to help from my fellow users and gamers

Your welcome.
There's no substitute for researching, but it can get awfully confusing, and often with contradictory information or suggestions.
I'm not a gamer, but I think that checking out gaming forums for IPS monitors would be helpful.
You should also check out video card manufacturers' official or unofficial forums for user feedback with high resolution IPS monitors.
EVGA and MSI are two forums that I'm aware of.
Let us know what you finally end up with and how well your new monitor works.

I clicked on the Human Benchmark - Reaction Time Test link at the end of the Tom's IPS Monitor review to see what my reaction/response score is.
My average reaction time after 10 attempts is 309.8ms.

This score has nothing to do with my being several decades older than a college student.
My not so great score is due to my 5 year old computer hardware.
This means that I would be a half-fast gamer.
Do any of the youngsters in the forum think that they can beat my score?

if you want less blurring in fast moving games then a 120hz is essential,same goes for 3d gaming,benq make good monitors too

my score, 170-220 range :) but 189-190 is the most common hit in my 30ish tries or so
