  • Time for me to upgrade ??

Hi guys, some upgrade advice needed.............. I bought this gaming computer about a year ago, although I don't game, just like having a fast computer, haha.

I love the fast CPU, I-7 860, and everything else................BUT, the motherboard has never liked the 4x2gb 1600's running at 1600, gotta slow em down to 1333 to be stable ;( (.blue screen errors despite trying every tweak I've seen posted here, ie. increasing dram to 1.66 and QPI/vtt to 1.21, etc).....but, i lived with that til now, cuz its still a pretty fast system .

...now that i just bought a new OCZ Vertex 3, 120gb SSD, that I have to run at SATA 2 speeds, cuz the ga-p55a-ud4p motherboard's marvel chip sucks, and doesn't actually run at sata 3 speeds.........groan..............I was thinking it might be time for a new motherboard....(i think i've heard from these forums a mb with "native sata 3", whatever that means)............and cpu, cuz i probably can't put my old i7 860 into a newer motherboard.........to get the memory and ssd running at the speeds they are supposed to..............again, i think my other components, silverstone 750 ps, corsair 1600 memory, hd6850 video card, etc should be fine, right ?

so, i am thinking about a mb and cpu upgrade....but, which way to go......any suggestions.........?

    thanks

native sata3 means intel sata3 controlled ports,if your rams rated at 1.5v it will be fine if its 1.65v rated then it wont be any good as sb need lower voltage ram, your best to wait imo till ivybridge and z77 comes out, either go ivy or go for cheaper used z68/2500k/2600k/2700k combo

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

hmmm, sounds like I'd have to run my corsair cmx4gx3m2a1600c8 memory at 1333mhz to keep the voltage down to 1.5 in a SB motherboard.......i think this memory needs 1.65 to run at 1600.

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

The question that should be asked is does the memory and SSD speeds are realy an issue?
You can try and lower timings for if you cannot run the RAM at 1600 7-7-7-12/20 may work.
And would you realy notice the difference of SSD speed?
        Is your CPU overclocked?

no, i am not currently overclocking........just trying to get the memory to run stable at 1600, will try 7-7-7-12/20, haven't tried that yet, corsair just tells me to run it at 1333 and be satisfied (in so many words), which kinda rubs me the wrong way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and i don't know if i'd notice the speed difference running the SSD at sata 3, rather than sata 2.........i mean, i should, right ?

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

Sorry should have been 7-7-7-21 or 7-7-7-20.
For 2 kits it is best to have each kit in one channel (one kit in slots 1 & 2 and the other in slots 3 & 4).

As for SSD speed it really depends what you do. Most people just put the system and programs on it so if windows load in 20 seconds or 10 does it make any difference?
If you do CPU intensive tasks then overclocking will benefit more. Sure Ivy Bridge will be faster and overclock more but will cost money too, while overclocking your P55 will only cost time.

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

ok, i don't understand memory timings really well, but, 7-7-7-12/20 did sound a bit weird, haha..........ok, i think i can figure out the bios memory timings again....i hope..............i have only tried 8-8-8-24, and 1600, which always gave me frequent blue screens, regardless of voltage tweaks to dram and qpi/vtt, ....or 9-9-9-24 and 1333 which works better, but not perfect, (rarer blue screens) with standard (auto) voltages

ok, so try , 1600mhz, and 7-7-7-21, and, 7-7-7-20, with auto voltage settings ? right ?

hmmm, i guess from looking at my memory number, cmx4gx3m2a1600c8, then i have two kits, each kit is 2x2gb=4, for a total of 8gb?............u said one kit in slots 1 and 2, second kit in 3 and 4, but, all 4 chips look identical to me, how do i know which slots to put where, if all 4 sticks look identical ?.....numbers etc look identical......btw, i bought this system used, 16 months ago, from a gamer off of craigslist, who needed money, lol

and idk about the ssd drive thing.........certainly, windows loads faster with the OCZ running at sata 2 speeds, and my programs seem a bit snappier., (atto speeds are about 250..not a big difference running on the gsata(marvel) ports vs. the intel(sata 2) ports, or which drivers i use.........currently running on intel sata 2 port, achi on, rst driver.

i just figured, if i paid for sata 3 speeds on my motherboard, and my SSD, i would like to get it.......but, from what i have read, the marvel chip on my mb is the bottleneck here..........not a huge deal though.......

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

                No, 1333 with 7-7-7-21. It's not the same as 1600 8-8-8-24 but better than 1333 9-9-9-24.
Maybe you have a faulty memory module or it could be software problem.
Have you tested them with memtest86+?
Best way to know is test each kit individually @ 1600 in slots 1 & 3, and one of them if they both proved ok in slots 2 & 4.
If both fal in slost 1 & 3, try both in slots 2 & 4.
If you have XMP profiles you can just use that with a bit more than default qpi/vtt.

EDIT: and you need the rated 1.65v DRAM Voltage for 1333 7-7-7-21.

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

ok, u lost me a bit there...with how to test the memory...let me try to digest that in the morning, when my head is clearer, lol....but, i have memtested all 4 sticks, at 1600, 8-8-8-24, first, individually in slot 1 for 8 passes, then all 4 together for 8 passes (as i recall)

I have upped dram in increments up to 1.66 and qpi/vtt up to 1.21, rarer blue screens, but, not gone completely........have done fresh installs of win7 pro and ultimate, basic drivers, etc, etc.......i'm confident its not a software issue, as, this motherboard has known issues with ram when filling all 4 slots.....maybe the best i can hope for is running at 1333 (which is what corsair tech support tells me), and upping voltages from stock til i get the best stability........and wait for ivy bridge, then just replace mb, cpu and ram.......

Re: Time for me to upgrade ??

It's simple, timings are about time not cycles.
8 cycles at 800MHz(memory clock, DDR-1600) are 10ns, 10ns at 667MHz(DDR-1333) are 6.67 cycles, rounding it up and you get 7.
Actually you should be able to run CAS 7 up to 700MHZ(DDR-1400), but you need the 1.65v for the memory.
If you will be ables to run them at those timings you could overclock the BCLK to 167x 17 cpu multi and run the ram at 1333, ram performance will probably be better than running it at 1600 at stock BCLK. The CPU can be Oced to 3.5GHz with this BCLK.

Have you tried 1333 with 7-7-7-21 timings and 1.65v yet?

BTW where is the VTT limit of 1.21v from? Intel's datasheet says 1.155v max for notmal opertation and absolute max 1.4v.
