  • Overclocking problem

I had been running a 44x turbo on each core with no problems, I had made no changes but to manually set DRAM voltage to 1.5 even though I've never seen it move, everything good as far as I could tell. Ran Prime 95 for about 3.5 hours and all was good. I've been proceeding cautiously, obviously, but decided it was time to push for a little more speed.
    That's when I screwed up.
I loaded optimized defaults and went back to reset everything and now can't get MIT to change the turbo clock on core 3 (bottom on the list). Everytime I hit page down to change the clock it sets the other 3 cores back to Auto and does not change itself.
I can change the main cpu multiplier with no problems, but now can't set the individual turbo clocks.
What am I missing here? Did I screw up by loading optimized defaults, cause that's exactly when the problem started?

    Re: Overclocking problem

Na, it isn't due to optimized! You may need to clear the CMOS though if you continue to get stuck there.

Just be sure you have turbo enabled, and that you are not trying to set the single (Lower on the list) core values higher than the main core value

      Re: Overclocking problem

I never use pgup/pgdn in bios, only Numpad +/- and arrows, enter and (typing value) somtimes.
Does that also happens when you use numpad + & - or when you type a value?

gonne reboot and try pg keys now :) ... brb...

      yeah, you are right!
the 4-core field is behaving odd for me too.

if I set cpu clock ratio on top to 47x, and then proceed to set Turbo Ratio(x-Core) to 47 also with pg-dwn the 4-core field will trigger the behavior. numpad+/- is the same.

but f I set cpu clock ratio at default multi (33x in my case) and then set turbo ratio's, it does work okay...

        Re: Overclocking problem

I only use arrows and +/-, never pgup/pgdn, so not sure.

I always set them all the same, so not sure what the normal experience would be setting them differently or anything other than the same as the top main one.

*Edit* Doh! And of course, all my comments here were about X79, sorry man! But I used Z68 the same way too, same keys used and same core settings, just haven't used it for a while is all

Yeah I never noticed too, but fiddling with it to see if I could reproduce did show me the same as ts describes.

I did notice before you had to take that list from top to bottom, if other way around it does act odd too on the advanced cpu core features page. Moving with arrow keys from bottom to top the screen builds up in an akward way.

Hmm, I have that same board here, I'll try to check that out in the next day or two! *Edit* Ohh, only version 1.0 here, but same BIOS I believe so testing will be the same for us.

Did this happen on older BIOS too, or only new ones? If only new, which BIOS are you using so I can be sure to test that version? Thanks!

                Re: Overclocking problem

Before I had been running with the cpu master clock @ 42 for a while, got sidetracked on other stuff and came back and returned to 3.4 then set each turbo to 4.4. Ran like this for a while until yesterday when I loaded optimized defaults and immediately could not change the mulipliers in each cores turbo mode. I've always used the page up/down keys, never could enter anything in the window when you press enter? Unless , hmm, if Numlock isn't set until after BIOS setup??

                      Re: Overclocking problem

All looking good. All I've had time for is 4.5, been busy on home projects. I think I will start looking for a new cpu cooler, the 212+ is letting cpu edge over 80c just running Intel Burn Test.....and that's with 2 fans attached in a push/pull. Besides the normal fans that come with the HAF 922 I've added a 120mm to the side vent I had leftover from another cooler, but it doesn't seem to do anything but add noise. I've got a couple of higher flow 200mm fans coming but could use some tips on cpu coolers that will work with this board and the Z77'S when they come out. For now I'm going to stick with air cooling as I have to pull this thing down fairly often for dust cleaning. (LOL sounds backwards but even with stock fans it's dusty enough here to have to clean frequently)

Yeah, it's already in the high 80's here. But the house seldom gets over 78* F. Those are some massive coolers! Looks like the split design with dual radiators is common in those coolers.
Fortunately with the HAF 922 space won't be a problem. Dust IS a problem and I have to pull the filters often and clean and once a month blow out the rad on the 212. I had thought about setting up a positive pressure in the case but while it might be good for dust I don't think cooling will be as efficient. ....which brings me to my only gripe about the HAf is the 6 tiny screws holding the front on which requires removing both sides.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take a closer look at those coolers later!

What I see all the time reading cooler reviews is RAM clearance problems for RAM with heat spreaders. Many coolers let you adjust the inboard-most fan up a little for clearance but they don't tell you how this affects cooling performance.
I guess I want it all: clearance, quiet fans (at idle, anyway) and high efficiency.
