  • The end for Z68XPUD4

    A few problems I have had :

1/ Boot problems including the dreaded boot loop ... basically solved
2/ USB keyboard is there sometimes and sometimes not ...very hard to enter password without keyboard ...
3/ Video problem......everything is ok until after I enter my password and it loads windows...... the screen goes blank and sometimes a reboot works sometimes not, funny thing is you can hit ctrl-alt-del and the window appears and you can enterTask Manager and then that window will appear but on top of a blank screen/black screen...... also can then get the windows support and help window up ( still on the blankl screen ) and from there follow a link to windows online using firefox......then finally the windows screen I have appears

Now the last problem could be anything but I think its time for a new chipset ( new motherboard...z77 series )

    Re: The end for Z68XPUD4

Yeah, that boot loop thing with Z68 is indeed weird. I had that initially, also the BIOS would hang and the cursor would run up and down the page. Fortunately BIOS updates seemed to be the cure in this case, and also I came to Z68 late and the BIOS "fix" wasn't long coming. The BIOS the board shipped with was definitely a work in progress-initial setup, drivers & Windows install was a PITA with the boot loops. But that's old news now and like you say I'm moving on to Z77 and the Z68 will run a seedbox machine in the near future. But it's not just Gigabyte that had problems with Z68. I have an Asrock Z68 in my HTPC that although is running flawlessly 24/7 now, was a major PITA to get set up and running. Never used clear CMOS so much .....but at least the Asrock had the jumper right on the board, ready and waiting!

According to what little I've seen so far, no standout problems, but who knows?
I will keep my fingers crossed, my next build is going to be my last for a while, most likely.

          Re: The end for Z68XPUD4

am considering the new Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB Motherboard

but would hate to spend the money and see the same problem

BUT from what I have read the Z77 are a massive improvement in terms of reliabilty

edit: I think I may have solved the problem ......the Dell monitor has USB ports and card reader also has an USB stick in......... so will see what happens with a cold boot tomorrow

last edit : I think I have solved the latest problem, nothing to do with graphics card or windows ..its all the motherboards weirdness :-)

basically dont have any usb devices attached ( other then mouse/keyboard ) when booting...... now the boot is quick and without problem

20 years mucking around with computers and I have nether encountered such a fussy and temperamental motherboard ..... but any more hissing fits from this mobo will see it meet a very big hammer

            Re: The end for Z68XPUD4

moved everything to a new case and it all fired up first up .. pretty impressed with myself :-)

BUT when I finally decided to plug in the front usb 3 cables ( pass through to the back usb3 slots and the USB2 to the onboard headers the dreaded BOOTLOOP cycle returned

just when you start to feel good about yourself and this board it jumps up and bites your arse off ... turned of USB in the bios and had to move the keyboard and mouse to the USB3 ports to get them to work but it wont let me back into the BIOS..the del to enter BIOS doesnt work but at least the bootloop has stopped

What case did you get? I moved my Z68 to the Antec three hundred two and it has a front USB3 plugin for a mobo header.

                Obsidian 650D

Yes...it has the USB3 at the front but they are passthrough cables to the back usb3 connections

Would much prefer to use the onboard USB3 headers ... the USB2 ones on the front go onto the onboard headers

                    Re: The end for Z68XPUD4

I bought the 302 case partly because of the front USB 3 plugging into onboard header, but if you buy that GA-Z77-UD5H board, included is a 3.5 inch front panel with USB 3/2, assuming you have a place to put it.
Fortunately I never had any major USB problems with my XP-UD3 board, but I don't have any USB 3 devices in use right now on that rig. But honestly I was thinking about ditching Gigabyte for ivy bridge but went ahead
and bought the UD5H after seeing the improvements made all around. Even if didn't get the new ivy bridge cpu I think you would happier with the new Gigabyte Z77 boards.
