  • GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

    Hi guys ,

I have problem with my MB. My pc can't shutdown. Operating system (no matter linux or windows) will shut down (I hear the HDD's and cd drives turn off) but ALL the fans remains ON. (VGA,CPU fan and PSU -never turn off no mater what length of time). . Also power led stay constantly ON after shutdown. The problem is with MB , I'm almost sure

I have tried with another good quality PSU - same issue. Then I've cleared CMOS and reflash with latest BIOS (F12) but these steps didn't fix the problem.
    Replaced video card with another....

The problem has existed since I've attached one HDD drive on Esata port. And my mainboard won't shutdown anymore.
So maybe the problem with SATA controler or...?

Also noticed that in some cases it's possible to shutdown - but this is immediate when turn the pc on, and instantly shutdown the OS. If you take 10 minutes or more , shutdown is not possible.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

    My configuration is MB : GA-P35C-DS3R , CPU E8500 E0, VGA: Nvidia 8800 GTS 512MB , RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600 (@1333). HDD's: A-data S511 120GB , 1TB Caviar Black , Seagate 7200.12 500GB. PSU : CM Silent Pro 700W. , Sata DVDRW

    Cheers

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

Are you using the GB e-sata powered bracket for your drive?
Which of your drives is using the e-sata connection?
What is the version number of your motherboard?
    What is the bios version?
Which sata ports are you using for drives?
What is the the sata port name for each drive? For example: WD 1TB connected to GSATAII0.
Have you tried using windows Safely Remove Hardware to remove your e-sata drive before shutting down?

My P35-DS3L system has no problems shutting down with a WD 1TB Caviar Black or a Samsung 2TB drive connected to an e-sata port.

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

      Hi Profjim,

      Thank you for fast response.

      My answers :

Are you using the GB e-sata powered bracket for your drive?
      Yes

Which of your drives is using the e-sata connection?
None of them. I've attached another drive to GB E-sata port (250GB seagate) accidentally- to check some files on this drive.- Then I removed this drive. The other three disk are internal and connected via normal SATA2. There is no drive on e-sata port now.

What is the version number of your motherboard?
      2.0

      What is the bios version?
      F12 (latest)

What is the the sata port name for each drive? For example: WD 1TB connected to GSATAII0.
I don't remember right now. I'm not @ home to check. But i can check later.

Have you tried using windows Safely Remove Hardware to remove your e-sata drive before shutting down?
No , because I was under Linux @ this moment.

So I'm not using e-sata port , but the problem remains with or without disc connected to e-sata port. Just the problem stared after attaching this 250GB to e-sata port.

      Cheers,

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

Unplug the sata cable for the e-sata bracket and see if the your system shuts down normally.
If this doesn't help, try booting and shutting down with only your operating system drive connected.
You might also need to test with your optical drive disconnected.

I've cheked this - but this didn't fix the issue.

          Will check this today.

I've also checked also this step - with no success.

Which usb devices are connected to your system? keyboard? mouse? wi-fi? usb hub?
There is multiple USB device connected to pc : KB , mouse , usb hub , bluetooth device...and 2-3 cables (micro and mini usb).
Tested withoth usb hub and bluetooth - same situation.

Absolutely. I have two OS , and in both cases - there is shutdown as I always did. I never use sleep mode.

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

Other than temporarily connecting a drive using the e-sata bracket, are there any recent hardware or software changes?
After updating your bios to F12, did you load optimized bios defaults and then make any required bios changes?
Is your memory and/or cpu overclocked?

This is a long shot; can you test with DDR2 memory instead of your current DDR3 memory?

It will help us if you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs section in your forum profile.

After updating my bios to F12, I did not optimized bios defaults.
                    I've switched from 4 x 2GB DDR2 to 2 x 4GB DDR3 , before a month.
                    Memory is 1600 with latency 9-9-9-24 , but i ran @ 1333 - 7-7-7-19.
(There is no errors on memtest.) CPU is not overclocked now (but tested @ 4+ Ghz)

I can also try with DDR2 ..it's good idea!

PS: strange I can update my system specs @ the moment and I'm pasting again here :

The quickest and easiest thing to do is:
                      1. enter the bios
                      2. load optimized bios settings
                      3. save settings and exit
                      4. re-enter the bios and make any required bios changes, such as boot order, voltages, etc.
                      5. save these basic settings as a bios profile using F11 at the main bios screen and use a profile name such as Defaults
                      6. save settings again and exit
                      7. boot into your operating system
                      8. pray

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

If the procedure above doesn't help:
                        1. turn off your system
                        2. unplug the power supply cable from the wall outlet or the back of the psu
                        3. press and hold the front panel on/off switch for 10 - 20 seconds
                        4. place a jumper block on the clear cmos pins for 5 minutes
                        5. remove the jumper block and restart your system
                        6. enter the bios and load your saved bios profile using F12 at the main bios screen
                        7. save settings, exit, and boot to your operating system

Sometimes removing the motherboard battery is required when clearing the cmos.
You might need to clear the cmos for 20 minutes or for several hours, sometimes an overnight cmos clear is required.

                          2. unplug the power supply cable from the wall outlet or the back of the psu
                          3. press and hold the front panel on/off switch for 10 - 20 seconds
                          4. place a jumper block on the clear cmos pins for 5 minutes
                          5. remove the jumper block and restart your system
                          6. enter the bios and load your saved bios profile using F12 at the main bios screen
                          7. save settings, exit, and boot to your operating system

Sometimes removing the motherboard battery is required when clearing the cmos.
You might need to clear the cmos for 20 minutes or for several hours, sometimes an overnight cmos clear is required.
                          OK thanks.
This procedure didn't help - I have removed battery last night for 10 or more hours and also power supply cable was unpluged whole night.Situation does not change.
*But I have not pressed the front panel on/off switch for 10 - 20 seconds.
                          Also not loaded optimized settings.

I will try first with optimized bios settings later today. Then will remove some of hard drives to check, and also can try with ddr2.. but need to find some modules first.

You can test with a single memory module, DDR2 or DDR3.

Re: GA-P35C-DS3R won't shutdown after OS halt.

                              Hello again.
Tested a number of things ... and maybe found the problem.
                              1. Load optimized settings didn't help
                              2. Tested all 3 Disks alone - didn't help

                              3. Replaced ddr3 modules with 2x2GB ddr2 (800Mhz , SPD settings) - and tested. So far so good. My system was up for 57 min. , and shutdown was possible.
Also tested with Windows OS for 10-15 min up - shutdown normal.

Maybe these ddr3 modules cause this issue , but still I can't confirm 100%. Need more time and tests. (I'm not @ home right now)
But first when I switched to ddr3 (from 4 x 2GB ddr2) there was no problem ...which is strange. As I said problem start after attaching HDD to eSata.. but if the problem is with DDR3, probably this is a coincidence.
