EP45-UD3P Temp readings

Hi there,
I've recently gotten my hands on a cheap q6600 Engineering sample G0 stepping moving from an old e5200.

I tried overclocking it out of the box and got it at 399X8 = 3.2Ghz stable with no voltage tweaks.
So far so good.

But then i tried to run prime and temp readings in the 70C range.
however, HWinfo and Easytune report them around 60C.
Cpu-z also for some reason does not give the correct clock speed.

I'm on the F6 bios and was wondering if Core temp or Hwinfo has some issues with reading the temps on the ES chips?. I'm not sure which one is accurate.

It looks like you have EIST and C1E enabled in the bios for saving energy.
With lower system loads, the cpu multiplier will be lowered somewhat.
Your core temperatures will be higher with higher room temperatures.
F6 is an old bios version, using Q-Flash to update to the latest bios version might help.
Avoid using @BIOS for flashing and check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...ash-guide.html for more information.

With lower system loads, the cpu multiplier will be lowered somewhat.
Your core temperatures will be higher with higher room temperatures.

yes EIST and C1e are enable, but i forgot to mention, cpu-z should show 3.2 ghz since i was running prime95 in the background with 100% cpu load

It's best if you crop the unneeded portion of the screen so that it will be easier to read the details.
Try running with an older version of CoreTemp.
You can also see what CPUID Hardware Monitor reports.
Your ET6 window shows the cpu temperature, not the individual core temperatures.
Hopefully it's not an ES cpu issue and that the most recent bios version will fix the problem.

ok, i've attached a cropped version with CPUID Hardware monitor..looks like core temp and cpuid are reporting the same temps.
HWinfo is reporting around 10C lower.

an older version of CPU Z is reporting the correct clockspeed. I'll try a bios update next..thanks

Updated to F10, but still the same...ill wait a few days for the artic silver to set in..

just a quick update in case this helps someone else...The HWinfo temps were not being read correctly as TJunction was set to 90, when it should be at 100, hence the lower readings.

For the high temp issue, after some looking around, it appears the issue is the Xigmatek heatsink orientation along with the TIM application.
I changed the heatsink/heatpipe orientation so that the cooler fan blows air out of the back of my case. This also ensures the centre heatpipe on the bottom of the heatsink cuts across all cores of the q6600.

Additionally, i reapplied AS5 using the example here.

Idle temps now @44C (i live in the tropics so ambients are around 29C)
Load temps are now @ 67C max on prime 95. the cpu is also overclocked now to 3.6 Ghz.

You're welcome, thanks for the update.
The BenchmarkReviews technique is the best one to use with HDT cpu coolers.
Both of my systems use Xigmatek Balder cpu coolers exhausting air out of the top of the case, but both have dual core cpu's, not a quad core.
and have specific information for each cpu family.
