• ASRock P45XE Memory

Hello Everyone!!!
I have an ASRock P45XE WiFiN motherboard with 3 GB Ram (2x1GB and 2x512GB both in dual channel)
I want to replace the 2x512 GB ram with 2x2 GB ram
In the QVL it is mentioned that 2GB Kingston KVR667D2N5/2G is compatible and it works on dual channel!
I've bought 2 of them but nothing worked!! The computer would not start. All i had was a black screen. I could even get in the bios!

what did i do wrong since the QVL said that memory is compatible?
what is the right thing to do to have total 5GB ram (2x2GB and 2x1GB)??

Re: ASRock P45XE Memory

2x2GB + 2x1GB = 6GB of memory.
Remove your old memory and see if your system will boot with your new 4GB of memory and it is stable.
You will probably need to make some minor bios tweaks to get more than 4GB of memory to work.
Is your system overclocked?
Are you using default bios settings for your 3GB memory setup?
Are you using a 64-bit operating system? If yes, which version?
Please provide links to both of your older memory kits that show their specifications.

2x2 + 2x1 =6GB sorry about that!!!
Thanks for the reply!!

The operating system is 64-bit Windows XP Professional and the system is not overclocked. The bios version is 1.40
The older memory is 2x1 GB (Kingston kvr667d2n5/1g) and 2x512 (Kingston kvr667d2n5/512)
For the older memory i have the default bios settings. What kind of tweaks will it take for the new one?

Re: ASRock P45XE Memory

Try booting with your new 2x2GB memory only and see if it works.
I'm not familiar with your motherboard, but I'll download your mobo user manual and make some suggested bios changes after we know that your system boots and is stable with your new memory. If your system won't boot with with both new memory modules, try booting with only one module installed at a time.

Always unplug the A.C. power cable from the back of the power supply before adding or removing any hardware!!

Re: ASRock P45XE Memory

I booted the computer with the 2X2GB memory only and it booted normally, but the bios only recognized 3GB instead of 4!!
In the bios in the advanced settings in the "Remap Ram" option i changed it to enable. Then the bios recognized 4GB of Ram. After that i put the 1X2GB and everything worked fine. The computer booted with 6GB ram!!!!

Thanks four your support profjim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: ASRock P45XE Memory

You're welcome, glad to hear that you're making progress.
You should download and run Prime95 large FFT test overnight to ensure that your system is stable with your current settings.
Download the 64-bit version from Prime95 Free Software - GIMPS
Before starting your test, make sure that round off checking is enabled.
If there are any errors, post a screen-shot of the Prime95 window which will show us how long the test ran and the error that occurred.
If one of the worker threads has an error, stop the test and create a cropped image of the Prime95 window.
Click on the Prime95 tutorial link in my signature for more information.

Which memory slots did you install each of memory slots in?
With 2x2GB plus 1x2GB of memory, there is a slight performance penalty because you're not running in full dual channel mode.
Intel Desktop Boards — Single- and multi-channel memory modes

**edit** you need to update your signature to 6GB of ram ;)

Re: ASRock P45XE Memory

In post #5, you said "i put the 1X2GB", so it looked like you had 3 memory modules installed.
With 4 modules installed you are running in dual channel mode.

Run the overnight Prime95 Large FFT test and if there are no errors, you're good to go.
