  • RAM Errors, Sytem catestrophic failures

    Hi there,

Every now and again my system suffers catastrophic failures and I get a BSOD.

    I have 6gb of Ram, 3x 2gb sticks of 667mhz PC5300.

I have tested the sticks individuality with Memtest86+ and they all go through a couple of passes with no errors, however when I put them in together, in any order, there are a number of errors that show up on the 1st pass.

Can anyone help me? I am on the verge of buying a new motherboard but I am keen to avoid it if possible.

    Cheers

      Hi wazza300,

      Many thanks for your reply.

I am running a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 motherboard and I updated the bios a week or two ago with the latest available. The BSOD has been an ongoing problem with the computer since long before the bios update.
The computer has an AMD Phenom 9550 Quad Core (4 CPUs) ~ 2.2GHz and 6gb of ram (3 X 2GB Sticks).

I'm not sure what the timings are but the bios timings are set to auto. I think its 6-6-6-7.

Any help would be great. I don't to have to fork out for a new motherboard.

      Many thanks

Re: RAM Errors, Sytem catestrophic failures

Could you provide the RAM's part numbers please? are they all the same?

Could be a RAM voltage possibly not being high enough... you're fine with 1 stick, but not 3? have you tried only using 2 sticks? if so, which slots?

and have you tested 1 ram stick in each slot individually? could be a bad RAM slot...

Re: RAM Errors, Sytem catestrophic failures

Vinster, many thanks for your reply.

          I have 3 stick in. 1 stick is 'Global' 2gb DDR2 667mhz CLS 240-Pin Dimm and 2x Komputer Bay 2gb PC2-5300/5400 DDR2 667mhz 2048 non-ecc.

I had tested all 3 sticks in slot one and they all came out error free. I thought might be slot 2 but my comp has failed twice since I moved the sticks about. At the moment I have sticks in slot 1,3 and 4. The bios says the memory clock is x33.3 667mhz. All other settings are on auto. It says:
          Trfco for Dimm1 - 105ns
          Trfco for Dimm2 -
          Trfco for Dimm3 - 127ns
          Trfco for Dimm4 - 127ns

Any help would be appreciated. If it is the motherboard I'll just have to fork out for a new one but I hope it isnt.

          Cheers

Re: RAM Errors, Sytem catestrophic failures

i dont know much about amd systems but have a read on the side of the ram stick or packaging and see how much voltage its rated at,usually 1.5 or 1.65v,then look in the bios for dram voltage and set it to what the rams voltage is,you could need one or two clicks more than what auto is using for cpu northbridge voltage too,be sure to update to the latest mb bios before you alter those settings

Re: RAM Errors, Sytem catestrophic failures

The Komputer Bay Memory (If I found the same ones) are rated for 1.8V and so is your motherboard. I cannot find any details on the 'Global' memory that you noted...

what if you only run 2 ram sticks (Komputer Bay) in slot 1 and 2, go in your Bios and confirm that the DRAM voltage is 1.8v and try another memtest... also did you check your manual to make sure this motherboard supports running an odd number of memory sticks?

I had an old Intel board and as long as I had an even number of sticks it was fine, add a 3rd stick and it just wouldn't work.

why regurgitate a question that was already asked (literally) when he posted his MB? and an AMD system doesn't have a QPI setting.
