  • GA EP43T-UD3L SATA/AHCI doesn't work anymore, only IDE

I bought an EP43T-UD3L from Newegg about 3 years ago, and well due to overclocking of a quad core, the 12v outlet burned out when I ran a maximum power and heat consumption test with prime95 to check for stability. I recently replaced the motherboard and it was the exact same one, the only difference now was that the 6 SATA ports that were orange were now blue. Everything always worked when I did a new installation of Windows 7, but now I can only run the OS in IDE mode even though the bios has an option to switch to AHCI.

I'm not sure what drivers are missing from this motherboard with the blue sata ports, but the one with the orange sata ports immediately let me install the intel rapid storage software after installation of windows 7. Now it says the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements to install the software. I know that something is missing about this motherboard with the blue sata ports because when the one with the orange sata ports burned out I switched them on the same installation without having to even do a repair install and it was running in ahci mode, still.

Now that I've done a new installation (when I did the installation it was already in ahci mode) ahci doesn't work anymore it gets stuck on the bios loading screen and hangs there forever.

For anyone that works here and has worked on the EP43T-UD3L motherboard with the orange sata ports, do you know what was taken away from the EP43T-UD3L board with the blue sata ports? If I can figure that out I may be able to get sata and ahci working like it did on the orange sata port one.

There are four motherboard versions: 1.0, 1.1, 1.3, and 1.4
Check the revision number for your motherboard in the lower left rear corner, near the lowest pci slot.
All the pictures on the Gigabyte site show 6 yellow sata connectors.
It will help if you double check the model number printed on your motherboard.

Re: GA EP43T-UD3L SATA/AHCI doesn't work anymore, only IDE

I won't argue with yellow versus orange, it depends a lot on the ambient light.
What threw me was your comment:
the only difference now was that the 6 SATA ports that were orange were now blue
Boot into the bios and press CTRL + F1 keys at the same time. The bios screen will quickly flash and then go to the Integrated Peripherals screen. Check to see if you have the following bios options:
            • Sata AHCI Mode
            • Sata Port0-3 Native Mode

If both of these bios options are available, you will boot into windows to make a minor windows registry change.
Before you edit the registry, there will be a couple of steps to help protect you from yourself.

Yes those two options were available.

Yeah and the EP43T-UD3L with the blue ports looks exactly like this EP43T-USB3

I don't know, the EP43T-USB3 sata port color looks like it's really.......
                blue.

Read and understand the AHCI : Enable in Windows 7 / Vista - Windows 7 Forums tutorial before starting.

A quick summary of the procedure:
                1. Use window's Regedit to change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\msahci registry key value to 0 (zero).
                2. Save the change to the registry.
                3. Boot info the bios immediately, do NOT boot back into windows.
                4. Make the following bios changes:
                  a) set Sata AHCI Mode = AHCI or ENABLED
                  b) set Sata Port0-3 Native Mode = ENABLED
                5. save bios settings and exit the bios
                6. boot into windows, letting windows install the AHCI drivers
                7. pray that everything works okie-dokie

                Any questions?

I did all of what you asked and after that it hangs at the bios loading screen just when it's about to load up the devices, it shows:

                  23

                  Controller Bus#00, Device#1F, Function#02: 06 Ports, 03 Devices_

Re: GA EP43T-UD3L SATA/AHCI doesn't work anymore, only IDE

The problem might be due to an incompatible IDE hard drive or optical drive.
Some sata optical drives have caused problems in the past.
                        1. With your system turned off, disconnect the outside power supply cable from the wall outlet or the back of the power supply.
                        2. Do you have an optical drive connected to your system? If yes, what type? Sata? IDE?
                        3. Do you have any IDE optical and hard drives connected to your system? If yes, what are the brands and model numbers.
                        4. Disconnect any IDE hard drive ribbon or circular data cables from the drives.
                        5. Try to boot your system again.

If there are no changes, repeat step #1.
Disconnect the game pads from your system.
Disconnect the sata data cables from each WD hard drive.
If you have a sata optical drive, try to boot from the optical drive.

Describe in detail if any of these steps helped or hurt the booting process.

Do you have an optical drive connected to your system? If yes, what type? Sata? IDE?
Yes one Lite-On SATA CD/DVD combo drive

Do you have any IDE optical and hard drives connected to your system? If yes, what are the brands and model numbers.
                          No

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my SATA optical drive won't work anymore now after I did the new installation. It won't read any discs. I had to use my other IDE drive. I will report back after checking what you asked.

Once we have more details, we will probably need to reset the two sata/ahci bios settings that we changed to let you boot using IDE mode again. We might need to test each sata drive individually with a minimal amount of connected hardware to your system to see where the incompatibility is.

Is your cpu and memory currently overclocked? If yes we might need to look into your bios settings and temporarily go back to stock speeds.

Re: GA EP43T-UD3L SATA/AHCI doesn't work anymore, only IDE

Yes my CPU and memory are overclocked.

I removed all usb devices and nothing changed there. Then I removed the SATA cables from both HDs and left the SATA connector in the optical drive, and it actually passed the bios loading screen and I was able to go back into the bios and set the optical drive to the actual name it usually has instead of just CD ROM.

So then I thought everything might be solved so I plugged both SATA cables back into the HDs and it once again got stuck on 23 with the same message. Then I tried just unplugging the master HD, which is the Western Digital 250 GB WD2500AAKS-00VSA0 and it passed the bios loading screen again.

So does this mean that the Western Digital 250 GB WD2500AAKS-00VSA0 is incompatible?
