  • Extreme6 board or CPU dead?

Ive just fired up a new ASRock Z77 Extreme6 motherboard with a new i7 3770 CPU and got nothing... so i think one of them is dead, unless im missing something...!

The fans all powerup fine, as does the hard drive and DVD drive. But my Samsung S22B350 HDMI screen stays blank, without even a flicker :(

Ive powered it up with only 1 stick of RAM (i got 2x 8GB Gskill F3-10666CL9S-8GBXL) and the CPU fan only attached and still the same.

What worries me most is that the DrDebug doesnt show anything on the display which indicates to me that its the motherboard itself with the problems... what do u think?

No mention of your power supply, is the eight pin CPU power cable connected to the connector at the top of the board? Be sure not to use a PCIe cable that are for video cards in the CPU power connector.

When using one stick of RAM, use slot B2

Are you using a video card, or the CPU's onboard video? Do you have a speaker installed for the POST beep codes?

If still stuck, you may need to remove the CPU and check for bent pins in the CPU socket.

Using the 8pin connector with a brand new Corsair GS600 PSU

No beeps, no speaker installed. One came with the chassis so ill try to attach that.

Nothing else connected so using the onboard video.

Ive now tested the CPU in another system and its fine. That means there is either something wrong with the ASRock Z77 Extreme6 motherboard or im diong something wrong

Whats the minimum i need to do to fire up the Extreme6 to check it actually works?

Re: Extreme6 board or CPU dead?

There might be a problem with your power supply, video cable, or monitor.
Your goal is to boot directly into the bios.

Unplug your power supply from the wall outlet and remove your motherboard from the computer case, there might be a short circuit to the computer case.
Remove all cables to your hard drive and DVD drive.
Remove all other add-in cards from your motherboard.
Remove all usb hubs or devices that are connected to the motherboard.
Place your motherboard on a cardboard box beside your computer case.
Do NOT put an anti-static bag under the motherboard when you are trying to power it up.

          Only install:
          • cpu and heatsink/fan
          • one memory module
          • ps/2 keyboard
          • case speaker on the front panel header pins of the motherboard
          • connect your video cable to the on-board video output
          • connect the front panel power (on/off) switch from the case to the motherboard's front panel pins
          • connect the power supply's 24-pin main power cable and the 8-pin EPS12V cable to the motherboard

DO NOT connect the RESET switch to the motherboard.

          Power up your system.
Does your system post and can you boot into the bios?
If no, disconnect your video cable from the motherboard.
Any improvement, such as beeps or LED codes displayed?
If no, borrow another power supply to test with, preferably a fairly recent, good quality psu.

Im using the monitor off my main computer so thats fine and so is the video cable. The PSU is new however so that needs checking.

Im using the monitor HDMI connection, is that ok or should i use VGA?

thanks for the advice Ill work through it over the weekend.

Re: Extreme6 board or CPU dead?

Can you try using a different video cable output connector, such as DVI vs D-sub or HDMI?
Carefully inspect all wires and cables to make sure that there are no problems or bad connections.

In a recent thread, the OP didn't have any bent cpu socket pins, but when he inspected the socket from a low visual angle, he found one pin that he said was about 1mm lower than the other pins. After he very carefully raised this pin his system booted and was OK. Also closely inspect all motherboard slots for any signs of damage or debris.

When all else fails, RTFM, especially the steps where the user manual goes into detail for each installation step.
It's very easy to overlook one or more items.

Sometimes a brand new power supply can be DOA or partially defective.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

What i was missing was simple... i was only attaching the main power lead to the board, i failed to see that the 8 pin connector must also be connected. Schoolboy error but had me stumped for ages

next time u post up the advice u gave me please HIGHLIGHT that u need to attach 2x power cables to the board ;)

Thanks for you honesty and candor. I did mention checking that in my first reply... easy to miss since it is hidden way at the top of the case and board.

When they call that connector "CPU Power", they mean it.
