  • Wake-On-LAN Works Intermittently -- Please Save Me From Going Insane!

    ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3/A/ASR
    Intel Core i3-2125 , 3.30 GHz, 3MB Cache, LGA 1155, 65w
    4GB RAM
    ubuntu 12.04 as server

The Wake-on-LAN feature works but sometimes it responds to the magic packet and other times it doesn't. The system always responds from sleep and hibernate - the problem is when it is powered off.
(Note that all commands are issued from the command line.)

I cannot figure this one out but following are the steps I've tried in testing:
    1. Return the motherboard to defaults using Exit\Load UEFI Defaults.
    2. Enable Restore on AC/Power Loss in Advanced\South Bridge Configuration.
    3. Enable PCI Devices Power On in Advanced\ACPI Configuration.
    4. Set the WDC drive as first in boot order. (The WDC drive has the ubuntu OS installed. The system defaults to the 3TB Seagate which is used as a public drive.)
    4. Click Yes on Exit\Save Changes and Exit.

Everything looks good in UEFI so now to the tests:
    1. From a remote computer on the LAN issue "shutdown -P now" to server. Server shuts down.
    2. Send magic packet. No response from server.
    3. Power on server manually using power button.
    4. Issue shutdown from server. Shut down successful.
    5. Send magic packet. No response.
    6. Power on server manually.
    7. From server issue pm-hibernate. Server goes into hibernation.
    8. Send magic packet (from remote). The server resumes from hibernation.
    9. Power off the server using the power button via press and hold until power off.
    10. Send magic packet. No response.
    11. Power on server manually.
    12. From remote issue pm-hibernate. Server goes into hibernation.
    13. Send magic packet.
    14. Server resumes from hibernation.
    15. From remote issue shutdown to server. Server shuts down.
    16. Send magic packet. Server turns on!!
    17. From server issue "shutdown -P +5." The system shuts down after 5 minutes.
    18. Send magic packet. No response.

This one is starting to drive me crazy. Any ideas?

I have been trying to figure out a board that seems to be waking without wake-on lan activated. Now I'm thinking it may be related to a wireless usb keyboard. But I found this interesting article (linked) about a new magic packet method called 'wake on pattern match', which I thought may have information related to your situation.
