  • new build, no video out z77 extreme 3 1155 with i3-3240

I just built a pc with an asrock z77 extreme3. 5th pc I've built in the past 5 years and I cannot get this one to post/output video. Cpu fan spins, case fans spin and leds light up.

I've tried a number of things such as the two ram sticks I have. I've tried them Together and individually in different ram slots. They are g skill ripjaw 2x2gb

I've tried clearing the cmos several times after different changes.

I've tried using the on board vga and dvi. I've also tried a pcie card in two different slots again in vga and dvi. The pcie card I tried was a xfx radeon 5450.

I've unplugged everything except a single ram stick and the monitor and still nothing. I'm using an older 17" hp monitor.

The cpu I'm using is an Intel i3-3240 3mb cache 55watt.

The only thing I don't have is a chassis speaker. I can see if I can find one if this isn't a known issue with this board.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Your memory may not be compatible, we need the full model name and speed in order to check.

Your CPU has onboard video, so it should produce video output from the mother board's video connections. The video card should work too, as long as nothing is connected to the board's video outputs at the same time.

What would the known issue about this board be? Defective from the factory?

Re: new build, no video out z77 extreme 3 1155 with i3-3240

I don't see my ram specifically listed but I did see several other g.skill ram models listed so I thought I was safe, maybe not? The specific model number of my ram is F3-10666CL9D-4GBXL

      Time for some new ram?

Also what I meant by common problem was some sort of compatibility issue with my hardware or the bios needing an update to support something I have.

You haven't included a detailed hardware list for your system.
Have you tried booting using the on-board video only, with no video card installed?
Have you tried booting with your motherboard placed on a cardboard box beside your computer case?
Can you test with a different power supply?
Are all of your parts brand new?

The G.Skill Ram Configurator shows that the F3-10666CL9D-4GBXL memory kit is compatible with your system.

One very important item that is sometimes overlooked is when you don't connect the power supply's 4-pin ATX_12V or 8-pin EPS12V power cable to the motherboard.

Modern systems will not post or boot if you haven't connected one of these cables.

I wish it was as simple as one of the two on board power connectors not plugged in but both are in and fully seated.

I've updated my hardware list in my profile.

I have tried the on board video only with no video card plugged in. That's currently how the system is sitting.

I have not tried it on a cardboard box yet. I can do that shortly.

I do not have an additional power supply to test with. Although this psu was pulled from a fully working system and seems to be working still.

Everything is brand new except the case which is two years old but never used before. And the power supply is from my first system build from 2008 which should be and seems to be still good.

Re: new build, no video out z77 extreme 3 1155 with i3-3240

Sometimes there are problems with a new build that "magically" disappear then the motherboard is tested outside of the computer case.
I always build and test my systems outside of the case.

We've solved some new system posting and booting problems caused by:
              • a faulty front panel reset or power switch
              • a faulty or improperly installed usb 3.0 front panel cable
              • problems with motherboard stand-offs
              • problems where the computer case was at fault, often near the rear I/O panel area

It's possible but unlikely that both memory modules would be defective.

You can send a private message to TweakTown's G.Skill - Tech Support, include a link to this thread and see if Matt can help out.

Ultra brand power supplies seem to be a mixed bag; some are terrible and some are pretty good.
Your psu is 6 years old which isn't a big deal if you have a top tier power supply.

those bios chips usually pull out on asrock boards,if so you could ask asrock to send you a pre flashed one with latest bios, maybe then it
would support and work with your ram

Re: new build, no video out z77 extreme 3 1155 with i3-3240

The out of case test failed. I tried a variation of configurations with the ram sticks. And I tried both vga and dvi again resetting the cmos after ever change. I tried leaving the cmos battery out of the mobo for over 30 minutes, no change.

How I tested out of the case was I had the 24 pin atx cable plugged in, the 8 pin atx cable plugged in, the power button cable plugged in, the cpu fan in cpu_fan1 slot. And 1 ram stick in ddr3_A1 slot. I then tried both dvi and vga video outputs separately.

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure nothing else needs to be plugged in to post if I'm not mistaken like a keyboard or a hard drive.

This mobo does have a removable bios chip and there have been several updates posted online for the bios since my bios version. I looked into it and from what I've seen updating blind would be nearly impossible.

I forgot to mention with the mobo out of the case and the other tests all failing. I then removed the CPU to ensure the CPU and pins all looked good and no dirt/dust snuck in but it's all luckily good. Reseated the cpu and reinstalled the cooler and again no change.

No no. Not speakers you connect to the audio jacks at the rear I/O panel.

A specific buzzer you connect directly to the MB's Chassis Speaker Header (SPEAKER1) position.

Yes. I'm picking some up today. One for this pc and some for future builds and other computers I'm diagnosing that do not have one in the chassis.

I was able to try a different ram stick. It unfortunately is also a g.skill ripjaw. But this one is a F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL. Also did not work.
