  • ASRock z68 issues with radeon 6950

Im not 100% sure about this problem as its a little odd.

About a month ago my pc would freeze up in the middle of gaming. The screen would freeze and nothing would respond. I would restart, things would work again, and then freeze in the middle of another game. After a few times the computer would no longer boot. Monitor would stay black but looking at the insides on the pc everything seemed normal. It would boot with the integrated graphics using my vga cable instead of dvi off of the video card. At the time I wasnt in the right area to investigate much further or fix it so I just used my laptop.

Fast forward til now. I move to a city and want to fix my computer. For kick and giggles I turn it on and golly gee it works. I can game and everything for hours on end. This works for about two weeks and then just last night my screen goes blank in the middle of a game. It didnt lock up like last time, it just went black, but the pc was still "on". Now im back to the black screen when i turn it on and only being able to get anything through my integrated graphics.

I tried switching my graphics on the PCI slot and that didnt seem to do anything.

At first I thought it was a dead slot or a dead video card but with it all working again, I got really confused. Now that it has stopped working, Im really at a loss.

Any avenues of approach to check and rule out the motherboard to the video card would be nice.

Re: ASRock z68 issues with radeon 6950

    Welcome to the forum.

Are you using a modded bios for your HD 6950 video card?
Are you using the latest Catalyst driver version?

Which version of the Catalyst drivers are you using?
As of today, the most recent non-beta win7 x64 version is 14.9 released on 9/28/2014.
Is your cpu, memory and/or video card overclocked?

Are you running any monitoring programs to verify that video card temperatures are not too high?
With HWiNFO, GPU-z and other programs you can enable sensor logging and later check the saved results to see if there were any heat related problems.

If you note the time of the problem, the windows Event Viewer might have some useful information.

One more thing to check, make sure that the dual bios switch is securely set to the #1 position.
If it still doesn't work, slide the bios switch to the #2 position and reboot your system.
