  • z75pro3 bios overclocking permanently disabled after cmos clear

My system would not start the other day. No error beeps no post. I did a cmos clear and it booted right up. After the cmos clear I went to configure the system in bios. I can no longer set the overclock speed in the bios. The multiplier is set at 37 and if I change it any higher it immediately changes to 37 in the box in the bios. Even if I use a preset profile, the cpu will not change speed to the preset profile. Also the xmp profiles for ram are not present anymore. My ram can now only be set to 1333 mhz.

Before the cmos clear I had cpu set to 41 multiplier and xmp 1600 ram. It ran like that for 3 months through stress test benchmarking etc and confirmed through cpuz utility. So why all of a sudden does the bios no longer let me change the settings? I have the latest bios installed. Pc works fine otherwise.

    Try this:
    1. shut down your system
    2. unplug the power supply's A.C. power cord from the wall outlet or the back of the psu
    3. clear the cmos for 10 - 20 minutes
    4. reconnect the A.C. power cord
    5. boot your system into the bios and then save settings and exit
    6. reboot back into the bios and see if you can then make bios settings

Sometimes you might have to clear the cmos for an even longer period of time.

Nope still acting the same. Its like the bios is in some sort of protective mode that disables overclockign or settign high RAM speeds. Or that the bios is confused and no longer associates a 2500k processor as being overclockable.

Re: z75pro3 bios overclocking permanently disabled after cmos clear

I left out one PITA step that might help.

After step #2 above, carefully remove the motherboard battery and then clear the cmos for a longer period of time.

Over the years, I've seen a few cases in the forum where it sometimes took an overnight or 24 hours for clearing the cmos to fix some problems.

In a recent Gigabyte thread the OP couldn't overclock his older X48 motherboard by even 1 MHz but he lucked out with only needing to perform a quick cmos clear.

You might need to temporarily disconnect all hardware from your system that isn't needed for entering the bios to make changes.

If you have a spare motherboard battery, it might help to install the new battery after your extended cmos clearing.

I tried the battery removal and clearing the CMOS for 4 hours. I did have another battery so put the other battery in. I also tried disconnecting all non essential HW and different combitnations. I then tried re flashing the bios. It is still behaving the same. I think i might have to RMA the board.

Re: z75pro3 bios overclocking permanently disabled after cmos clear

It sounds like your BIOS is corrupted. No idea what method you used to flash the BIOS. You should try flashing version 2.00 again using the Instant Flash method. Don't use the Windows version.

Download the Instant Flash version 2.00 BIOS, extract the contents and copy to the root of a USB flash drive. Insert the flash drive into a USB 2.0 port on the board's IO panel, restart into the BIOS and start Instant Flash from the Tools screen.

If that doesn't work, your CMOS/BIOS chip is probably bad. You could replace the chip itself, or RMA the board.
