I think you have got me a bit wrong here. I know the opteron outperforms the current athlon, I've said that every post. I have read every opteron and athlon64 review/preview on the web and will be one of the first people to buy the FX version when it is available if it does not require registered ram. (ie perhaps in the 939 pin format early next year) this is whether or not there is a 64bit windows!

It remains to be seen how the single channel athlon64 competes with the equivilent price P4

they certainly will challenge it in price......dual channel will be a marketing/price escallation ploy........the 144 already runs with the p4 3.2

    The 144 is dual channel!!
The question is will it perform as well with only single channel ie athlon 64 not opteron.

as I have said I have read your links but they are comparing an opteron not an athlon64 to the p4.

Many people will buy an opteron because of the extra performance but you will also have to buy new ram as it needs registered ram which works out quite expensive.

in short the athlon 64 768 (or thereabouts) pins single channel non registered ram

opteron 940 pin dual channel but registered ram.

and athlon 64 FX this will be a rebadge opteron 940 pin at launch and will need registered ram however next year there will be a 939 pin version and nobody seems to know if it will use registered ram or not.

my guess is not, this would make it more acceptable to the home market and offer performance a lot higher than athlon 64 and a bit higher than opteron!

EDIT: I think this is the best review if you have not seen it

    it runs faster http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=11149
and some pricing of the single channel variant, it should drop from that http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=11150
and, no guess, .......it's will not use registered ram

The first article you link to is in reference to a story that the CURRENT athlon will migrate to the 754 pin socket used by the athlon 64. It is very likley to be WRONG, even the Inq later decided that it was wrong and changed it to a story about HP needing athlon 64 without the 64bit
    http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11201

and it remains to be seen on pricing and performance of the 754 pin against the same price intel chips available at the time although I would expect AMD to be cheaper but I don't think it will perform anywhere near as well as an opteron, hence the late introdution of the dual channel FX to compete with intel at the high end.

EDIT I have just seen your ref to the use of registered ram see my previous post I know the 754 pin will not use EEC ram but it is single channel!! If you have info on the 939 pin memery controller please post the link (pref not the INQ LOL)

I (and most people) want non EEC dual channel DDR 400.

BTW this is the most exiting time in PC hardware for ages, reminds me of the athlon launch and like then I expect and hope AMD will have a performance advantage for the next year or so, however it will be with the dual channel soloutions not the normal athlon64.

other than coming out in the first quarter @ double the price.............but, really, i just want the biggest gun, and it looks to be the first quarter of next year to upgrade...........that includes the new wave of videocards as well.......and, really, who would uprade to the p4 or the 754, considering the cost differential of the two platforms  i'd opt for the opteron before that
oh by the way? North Wales, isn't that where grown men herd sheep?

    Hi to you all,

I am just wondering what all the fuss is about with the 3200+ Barton?
I am running an Athlon 2800+ (see My Rig) at those settings..why should I spend 400 on a 3200+ when mine only cost 99.- from Ebay (oem, brand new!) and it runs at a higher clockspeed than the 3200+

not everyone can afford 400 for a cpu!

    My Rig:
    Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 Bios 1003
    Athlon 2800+ Barton @ 2.43Ghz ~1.75v Diode temp. 50c.
    Volcano 9 Coolmod @3790rpm
    TwinMos PC 3700 (2x256Mb) @440Mhz
    Maxtor D740X 40Gb hdd
    Geforce2 MX400
    LiteoN LTR 16102B CD-RW
