Just for some clarification people, with the new processors having the memory controller on-die, the term "Frontside Bus" or, "FSB" is no longer correct as there isn't really such thing anymore. There still is the 200mhz internal clock that is generated then multiplied by 10 to get the 2ghz, but it really isn't a "FSB".

Depending on how things go, we should have a review online later this month.

Hi, can someone explain in very basic terms about the processor speed of the Athlon 64? I've read that it is 2.2 ghz, while the P4 3.2 standard obviously is 3.2 ghz. Now my question is seeings as many games today have a recommended speed of 2ghz, will this make the Athlon 64 obsolete very soon? I know that on nearly all benchmarks the Athlon 64 crushes the standard P4 3.2, but I'm just wondering how it works. Also is it actually worth buying the Athlon now? as I've heard it will be changing in a few months time, less pins, different motherboard and the memory will be changed.

    Many Thanks

It's called instructions per cycle. I'm not sure of those of the AMD64 cores atm but the P4 does 6/ipc and the Athlon XP 9/ipc.

This will only effect those in the market for the Athlon FX which atm is based on the Sledgehammer core where the Athlon 64 is based on the Clawhammer core.

They're the same thing, one is missing the dual channel feature, that's it.

Ok Great, Thanks guys. I actually should have looked more closely at the reviews, it does say 2ghz Pentium 4 not 2Ghz processor. Incidentally does anyone know an online chart that gives comparisons of the 2 chips speeds? I.e what the Athlon 64 running at 2.2 ghz actually is compared to the P4 at 3.2?

    Many Thanks

Well the A64 is faster obviously because its new, and the 3.2 isn't. The Pentium 4 isn't going to be the A64s competition, despite how well it keeps up. When the A64's competition arrives (Prescott), we should have some fun.
