    i want to upgrade my processor. my mobo has a 478 socket which i know that is needed to upgrade to the higher p4 processors, i currently have have a 1.6ghz p4, i contacted compaq and they told me that 1.6 400 fsb is all that my mobo supports, and i ran sandra and it also says that i can upgrade. the guy at compaq doesnt sound like he knows waht he's talking about. my comp is a presario 5000 (5423us) any have any knowledge on this?

    I have no personal knowledge/experience, but I can say this is in complete agreement with the support on-site at Compaq

    rats, that stinks why did they even bother putting a 478 socket mobo in the thing if ya can't upgrde? o well i learned my lesson on buying a crap comp. thanks for ht help

    If you have a 400fsb processor you should be able to run a 2.6 400 (I think that's the highest they went, not sure).

    Yes you should be able to run a faster 400fsb cpu but what memory are you using in that comp..:?:

    Please don't tell me that it's pc-133

    i am running pc2100, (266)so do you think its worth upgrading my processor?

    i am planning on upgrading from a p4 1.6 to a 2.4, i only have a 235w power supply do you think i will have any problems? btw i am running 1024 of pc 2100

    Yes, you probably will but it mostly comes down to what else the system contains. Something else to consider... with that significant a jump in processor speed, make sure your motherboard can handle the new CPU. Otherwise you'll just end up having to spend more money on a new mainboard.

    does processor voltage have anything to do with it? because my 1.6 is at 1.75 v and a 2.4 is at 1.525v.
