AMD starting locking socket A processors so that the only way to unlock them turns them into Mobile MPs that don't seem to work for the most part.
A Mobile 2500 or 2600 along with a nice HSF would be good. That should get to 2.4 GHz or even higher, depending on the motherboard (should with yours).

You could also just get a 3200, but I think it's actually possible to get a mobile 2500 or 2600 further than a 3200 because of the low power requirements and the unlocked multiplier. I've seen a lot of user reviews at Newegg in which the buyer claimed to have his or her mobile in the 2.7-2.9GHz range. That's insane for an $88 processor with $30 or $40 thrown into cooling. You can certainly OC it past 3200 stock speeds.

So bascially, just get a retail 2800-3200 for easy performance, or get the same or similar stuff as I am in that thread to get more bang-for-buck and maybe even more power overall.

My Volcano 7+ with Arctic Silver 5 keeps my 2100+ at about 35-40 C during normal use. Do you think that would be a sufficient heat sink, or do you think that should be uprgraded also?

That should be good enough. I doubt it's much worse than the Volcano 12. Just make sure you put Arctic Silver on your new processor. If it ends up being insufficient for getting a nice OC, you can always just go grab a better HSF for around $30 - $50. I'd almost bet you could bring a 2500 Mobile to at least 2.3 GHz with that, so don't worry about it.

I ahev seen many users get it up to at least 2.4ghz. In one of anadtech's articles they got it up close to 2.6 (2.5 something) which is really good for the price of the processor

Searching user reviews at newegg shows people have gotten up to 2.8GHz. But you do need the wire mod and PC3500 RAM to do that. The limitations will basically be cooling and RAM.

Yawgm0th, I appreciate the heads up about the xp-m 2500+! Between that and 2 sticks of 256 mb kreton memory, I can upgrade my system for under 200 bucks and gain some serious speed.

Read my thread at Beefy's World. There are links to it. It's the only way to get much over 200MHz FSB and remain stable.
