Default Athlon XP 3200+ using pc 2100

So I am looking to do some upgrades to my pc running the following:

    Athlon XP 2100+
    768 MB DDR 266
    Radeon 9800 AIW PRO
    ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

So I was looking to extend the life of my motherboard, and seeing as how the AMD 64 is still a little pricey I have been thinking about getting the Athlon XP 3200+ since it will max out my board and it is currently only 124 USD. The problem is that I am running PC 2100 memory and it would be a good chunk of change to get 2 sticks of DDR 400 at 512MB each to run in dual channel mode at this time. What kind of performance hit would the 3200 take while running with the slower memory? Nobody writes articles on the web about stuff like this so I hope there are people in the forums that can give me some opinions.

    thanks

Question, what's this computer being used for? Games? Some sort of Image creation/editing? Basic word processing and email? Might help to figure you which would help you most.

For a game like unreal tournament, I would probably get better ram then a better processor, the processor looks fine for that game.

You would probably have better results with an Athlon XP 2100 overclocked and PC3200 RAM than with a 3200 and PC2100 RAM.

Have you tried overcl****ing your CPU? That should probally bring it up or close to 3200 speeds

I don't know, 3200 speeds might be pushing it with just a retail HSF. You'd certainly need PC3200 RAM.

The machine is primarily used for gaming, and it is also my primary home computer for general use. I can run Far Cry without too much lag, and general processing is typically pretty quick. In regards, to overclocking...I haven't really been able to do it with this particular board. I was able to overclock both the cpu and the memory in a soyo dragon kt333 but this asus board is somewhat sensitive towards that. So I don't know how well it would react to a memory boost and a cpu overclock. I have a Volcano 7+, which also does an excellent job cooling and I just put an arctic cooler 3 on my radeon which I will add does a great job. So do you guys think I should just invest in 1024 mb of DDR 333 for dual channel use?

ya so buy a new heatsink and some new ram instead of wasting money on a new processor. And start overclocking

    EDIT: Damn i type slow

On the ram, you should probably go with ddr400 or ddr433 instead of ddr333.

So 2 X 512 MB PC 3200 memory and oveclock the cpu as high as it can go...do you recommend unlocking the multiplier? Haven't done it before but willing to try...

No, it won't work on your motherboard. It turns it into a an Athlon MP that doesn't seem to work on most single-processor motherboards.

I'd also just get 512MB. Two 256MB sticks of PC3200 or even PC3500 will give better timings and actually perform better in some situations (although 1GB is still better). Use the money you save from getting less RAM to get a new processor. That will show a lot of performance improvement.
