    Default AMD Athlon 64 3000+

    Hi People,

I have decided to buy a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ on 939. However, I am really confused with the different names it has, such as Newcastle, and Winchester. What is the difference? And how do I distinguish between them when I buy it.

    Your help will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Newcastle 3000 = 130nm, socket 754, single channel
    Winchester 3000 = 90nm, socket 939, dual channel

There is no newcastle 3000+ on socket 939. the lowest newcastle on 939 is 3500+

Cool. Thanks for that, but your last paragraph is confusing me more. You said 130nm is Newcastle on 754. Then you mention "the lowest newcastle on 939 is 3500+". Do you mean 754?

No, he means socket 939. There is a socket 939 Athlon 64 3500 with a Newcastle core, and that's the lowest-rated Newcastle for socket 939 (actually, the only one).

I see now. Thanks for the clarification. I've been a Intel user for the past 10 years, and I'm going to change to AMD to see how it feds when it comes to gaming.
