Do you have This checked to show both cores in Taskamanger? (One Graph Per CPU) >>>

    If not check it.

See when the other is checked you will only see one CPU >>>

What is your motherboard? I'll grab the manual and have a look

You could have fried a core, but not likely unless you were super overclocking?

What does device manager say for processors, does it have both?

Is this the download update you meant? Just wondering >>
    AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4

    WOW!

Click view, then click show hidden devices and see if it appears.

Looks like you may need to run a windows repair or a windows file replacement scan as your windows itself may be messed up. When did this start happening, did you just install some applications? Have you ran spyware and virus scans? What do you use for a virus app?

Do you have your windows Install cd? Are you on dial up?

If your answers are Yes, and NO

    Then do the following >>>

    1. Hit the windows Key + R
    2. Type CMD into the run box
    3. Type SFC /SCANNOW into the command window (note the space)

Yes, there is a ^^ space there, and it is needed

This will scan your windows files and replace any that are missing, you will need to reinstall ALL Windows Updates again though via windows update

BRB I am reading you manual to see if I can find what I was referring to above
