Question Intel Core2 Quad: Q6600 vs Q8200 - Which is better?

    Hello

I am trying to figure out which I should get, the Q6600 or the Q8200?

The Q6600 is over a year older than the Q8200, but from most of the specs, it seems that the Q6600 is better.

There is a $20 difference in price.

I will be using the CPU for virtualisation and other Server tasks.

Please tell me which CPU is best.

    Thanks in advance,

    Panarchy

Probably a Q6600 would be better.

Good overclocker too...since its FSB is 1066 only, OC'ing upto 3GHZ shouldnt be too difficult as the fsb is only upped to 333 which is well in the limits of a modern MB.

For overclocking, what should I be looking at?

I don't want to spend much on, well anything.

So I'd like to use the stock heatsink, and stock cooler fans, and a neat Case.

So would I still be able to overclock?

    If so, to how much?

    I have been asked to also take into account AMD, so here is a price guide (Q8200 is $20 cheaper);

    Intel

    AMD

Still unsure which is better, Q6600 or Q8200...

I'd probably take the Phenom II 920 over the Q6600. But then a Q6600 at 3.6Ghz is mighty difficult for the Phenom II to catch, so it's really 50/50 which way I'd end up going. I've had a Q6600 and it was a beloved chip. Not so fond of the Q8x00 chips though, and definately not fond of the Q9300 which is a terrible overclocker and a better chip then the Q8200.

    Ci7 920/6Gb Corsair DDR3 1600mhz/EX58-UD3R/HIS Radeon HD 5870/750Gb Seagate ES.2, 2Tb WD Green
    And several other rigs...

definitely not fond of the Q9300 which is a terrible overclocker and a better chip then the Q8200.
So it's a better chip but a worse OverClocker?

For OC, with the Q8200 ($20 cheaper... so yeah) would I be able to use the stock cooler and stock case coolers and still be able to overclock past 2.4?

It depends .Q6600 is supposed to be able to take higher voltages, but it seems it needs those anyway to o/c.
Also if buying new (this is only my theory ) the q6600 has been reported as not clocking so well recently, some people having trouble even getting over stock speed. Its gonna be phased out soon.
I wouldnt be suprised if chips were coming out that werent quite as good as before G0 stepping or not.As long as it works fine at standard speeds + a bit why should intel care.
The Q8200 is newer and the 45nm family should stay in production a bit longer. The Q8200 is supposed to have the lowest power consumption of the quads (lol the power consumption king)
Having said that the Q8200 needs high fsb and so good board and memory to go 3.2Ghz and a good cooler to go 3.5.
The "wisdom" is that 3.6,is around the max on it on air(Q8200),but Q6600's have reported higher, depends if you get a good one or not.
The instruction set is a little better on the Q8 also I think but I wouldnt actually recommend it for overclocking.
Getting it past 2.33should be np,id guess up to 2.8-3.0Ghz on stock items as long as the mbrd has plenty of adjustments.
If its only a choice between those 2,I wouldnt swop mine, for a 6600 +$50 but id be tempted to go for a 9550 or similar if I could sell mine .
My past experience of amd is that they have no oclk headroom, maybe thats changed.

    Thanks for replying.

A question I have about the Q6600 is it support Virtualisation, right?

I will be doing a lot of virtualisation.

Does that Intel Virtualisation thing make a big difference?

dunno about the virtualisation on 6600,but its handy for running other os especially since its free now. But looking at your buying sheet.. do you need 8 gig? and if you do maybe get double the amount of the mem i have(of the same type it should only be 80-100$).
I dont know the asus case,it has a built in 400w psu?
I wouldnt go that low..It would probably run ok with the Q8200 ,it would be a bit short on the Q6600 .
Better to go a decent 500+ psu for either cpu tho.
The ud3 boards(not my one ,but ud3r upward have r(raid) chipset ,and shouldnt be more expensive than the one youre looking at.
Are the cpu's still that expensive?..maybe so.. i got mine on a deal at like $220

    Hi

    Virtualisation is Free?

Hmm... so I've got to consider Watts as well. Thanks.

Yes, CPUs (in AUD) are that expensive.

What's special about the ud3 ones?
