Default Looking at a new build, needing some input.

I've been browsing around several sites and looking at maybe getting a new CPU & Motherboard. Currently I have three desktops, the first is a first generation Intel i7-860 is used primarily as a home server with a lot of space, its running Windows 8, I had some issues with Windows Home Server and drivers. Don't ask, its what I get for buying a cheap RocketRaid card. However my primary desktop is a AMD Phenom II 1090t BE with Hydrocool H70, it doesn't break a sweat under gaming or video editing, I recently upgraded the ram in it to 32gig since it was on sale.

The third computer I built as a ClearOS Box its worked perfectly. I used it out of spare parts from an old machine.

I've been looking at the latest AMD processors and Intel processors. Two have caught my interest from both manufactures, the Intel i7-3770k and i5-3570k CPU, and AMD's 8 core processors.

My first question is in laymen terms what is hyper-threading? What benefits does it use, I know its useless for gaming, is hyper-threading better suited for video editing, autocad, photoshop? The difference is $100 right now and I don't want to spend the money if its something I won't use or have applications for.

Newegg always has these combo kits but I want to make sure that if I am spending the money I want to pair the CPU with a decent motherboard. I don't care about overclocking, like I said I seldom play many games on the PC, that's what my PS3 & XBOX 360 are for!

Any answer will help, even some idea's on which CPU/Motherboard would be best suited. I already have the RAM, SSD, & I will most likely buy either another Coolermaster 212+ or HydroCool unit.

hyperthreading is allowing each core to process two threads of data at the same time rather than one,it speeds up video editing and anything that takes advantage of multithreads inc some games, games liek battlefield 3 and crysis ect

if your main things are video editing ect then a 3770k is worthwhile,if your mainly gaming/surfing the web then the 3570k is the better choice, motherboards depends on your budget, you can go for the cheaper z77 d3h mb or the more expensive z77x up4 th or z77x up5 th

ive always gone for multithreaded chips from the i7 920,2600k and now the 3770k,i just prefer them as they have the extra grunt, plus you can turn off ??? hyperthreading in the bios though i have no idea why you would do that
