I need help badly....my hard drive is messeD up!!! At first I was having probelms with it starting up. After the windows xp screen it would automatically restart...but after a few tries it would always work. Then the other day I restarted it and it never came back up......it wont get passed the windows xp screen at all..... and sometimes when I power it up, nothing at all will show as if the computers not even on!!!  I tried to reformat my hdd but, that doesnt work either.....it wont read the cd rom drive...and when I booted it from the cd rom ......it still wont reformat, it tells me something about bad blocks and a 0x0 sharing violation. Is this a virus? or has computer just decided to break randomly?? HELP! please

    Just a few questions:

    - Why can't you format? What happens?
    - Why doesn't the CD work?
    - If the CD doesn't work, then how did you boot from it?
    - Sharing violations are usually when something else is trying to access the drive at the same time. Bad blocks are, usually, bad blocks. :)

Something to try - FDISK / *insert your favourite partition program here*

Ok first off....the computer wont read the cd rom drive unless i go to boot setup.....and then make it read the cd rom drive. Second after i make it read the restore cd......it tells me bad blocks (what is that?) and then after i press continue it says 0x0 sharing violation and it forces me to abort. And if i try this process with the windows xp cd it says its reformatting but stays at 0% and it mentions something about partitions. SO thats why i cant reformat. WHAT do I do? I cant reformat AND my regular windows wont start up......its useless.

What brand of harddrive are you using?
Did it come with any floppy disks with it?

When you use the Win XP CD, and you said it says reformatting and stays at 0%, does it then show a window that says something about your partitions, or how does that come up? And what does it say exactly?

Lastly, have you tried to the "repair" XP function? (shot in the dark)

I would go to the Maxtor site and download the software it has to make a bootable floppy to check your drive out. It will allow you to run some tests and possibly repair your harddrive, partition it, ect. so you can then reinstall windows on it.

    Chez

This site probably has some stuff you could use.
That was from a quick google search.

Agreed. If nothing shows up then I would assume virus. The maxtor utility should also allow you to low level format the drive.

Do you have the bootsector antivirus turned on in your bios?

    Beefy,

I agree FDISK would be good to do.

Although wouldn't it be a good idea to use the tests on the Maxtor utility boot disk to see if the is broke and can be "repaired" via the utitilites.
OR am I missing something here again.

I think you are better at these harddrive issues so please share.....

    Chez:cheers:

Here is the site for FDISK if you want to use that utility. It also has links for making a bootdisk as well. ;)
