Will a Maxtor 160gb and a WD 160GB, both with an 8 meg buffer work with Raid, or do I need the same brand name drives?

They may get along ok together but I wouldn't bet on it which is why they tell ya to use 2 of the same make, model and size.

Even though the two hard drives are advertised as the same size, there will be differences in the number of clusters and sometimes even a difference in the number of platters and heads!

O.K. thats what I was wondering. I have both those drives on hand but the Maxtor drive is being used in this system and I wasn't sure if brand names made a difference so I'll probably just plop that WD drive in my new system for now until I get another matching Maxtor drive someday to try out Raid. I'm sure I'll have to reformat to use Raid when the day comes anyway (right?).

Yep... when you build the array it will be the same thing as removing the existing partition.
