Well you guessed it folks, just after spending $200cdn for a new soundcard and speakers, the dvd-rom decided to stop recognizing dvd's. The first movie I tried in it worked just fine, but that was 2 days ago. So last night I rented a few dvd's and nothing, it won't even recognize the dvd that worked a few days ago. What a major pissoff, just 2 days after finally completing the home theater setup.
    The event viewer says this.....

An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.
Upon further checking, this happened 10 days ago as well, but did not have trouble reading dvd movies.

    And this.....

The device. \Device\CdRom0. has a bad block.

This one just started happening yesterday and not 10 days ago like the other one.

This drive is hooked up as master since the autoclose will not work in slave mode and the cdrw does not have autoclose. The drive reads everything besides dvd's.

Since the 1 year warranty expired 6 months ago, I am going to open it and clean the laser with windex and a q-tip(works wonders for my dreamcast), nothing to lose. I will post back with the results.

Well I cleaned the laser and it did nothing. I think it's the bearings in the spindle, they make noise. It will play the dvd I rented last night on every try, but not any other dvd at all, won't even recognize them. So at least I got to try out the home theatre capabilities. Time for a new dvd-rom. I think I will get a dvd+/-rw instead.

While on the topic of dvd-roms, I have found out why most dvd-rom drives will not play dvd+r discs. It appears that most drives older than 1 year do not support the + format like my current one.
