    Ok here is thecurrent setup...

    gateway #performance1000(intel 815)(drivers from intel)
    pIII 1ghz
    384mb pc133
    gainword fx5200(crappy 64bit version)
    wd 400bb 7200rpm
    nec dvd/rw nd1300a rev1.08(new)
    smc1211 network card
    creative sound card
    power dvd xp4 6 channel
xp pro sp1 fully updated(installed 6 hours ago)

This machine had a liteon ltr 48246s cdrw that was a warranty replacement for a previous philips cdrw. When trying to use both drives, nt protection did it's 60 second blaster type shutdown and crashed lots and could not see the liteon sometimes. I tried either drive on slave/master. Finally settled on using just the nec as master alone.
Reinstalled windows and everything works fine except it won't recognize blank dvd's of any type. And some dvd movies won't recognize sometimes. Both nero and clone dvd don't see blank dvd's.

I have a theory that the 200w psu is not supplying enough juice to the dvd laser.
It did the same thing for the customer with windows me, that's why I redid it for him with xp pro. Figured it was just one of those stupid me problems.
I will try it in my rig next.

Note...this machine is still on warranty for 1 more month.

    Any ideas anyone?

Upon further inspection, I have discoverd one of those mass made type power connections on the mobo with black wires leading fron the harness(non standard). I will have to take a different route and try getting rid of the newer power hungry stuff to see if that makes a difference. Like one stick of ram(15w), obgfx instead, and maybe the soundcard(7w). I know even the fx5200's drain lots of power, like 75w. I will also try it in my rig. And try another same model nec in the gateway and the nec in another machine that has the same nec. Also will try a sony dvd/rw.
I already tried uninstalling the drive, same thing.

    It's just a major pain.

Ok tried it in my rig and 2 others. Definately toast. It will not recognize blank dvd's of any type, but does everything else. Another example of the large computer stores in Winnipeg selling refurb junk as new.

Again after refusing to leave the store without a new one, they had little choice except call the cops again. The new one (same make and model) works great just like it is suposed to. I keep telling people in Winnipeg to stop buying from these ripoff stores, when will they listen?
