My computer has stopped recognizing my DVD/CD-RW drive. The drive is a Sony DRU-51a that's installed on my custom Athlon machine. The drive no longer mounts at start up. At least, it doesn’t most of the time. Once in a while the drive will show up, but then my computer will become sluggish and then crash. Any help would be appreciated.

    Here's my specs:

    Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
    PSU: Antec 350 Watt ATX12V
    CPU: Athlon XP 3000
OS: Windows XP & SuSe Linux
    RAM: Kingston 512 MB
Graphics card: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
    Hard Drive: DiamondMax 120GB
    DVD/CD-RW: Sony DRU-51a
    DVD-ROM: Sony DDU162/10

    That should be everything...

I take it that you have both ROM drives on the same IDE channel but which one is the master?

The DVD burner is the master, which makes the DVD-ROM the slave.

That should be fine then but have you tried uninstalling the IDE channel that they're on and rebooting incase its a problem with the channel itself?

If it fails to show up in both OSs, it would be a hardware problem. If it is only in Windows, it may by software. Do you have the proper chipset drivers installed? Is DMA enabled on the ide channel? Drive jumpers set correctly?
