Are you talking about SATA to IDE converters (or vice versa)? Sure they work, but any socket 754, 939, or 940 motherboard will have built-in SATA and IDE. They're only necessary if you want to use a SATA HDD on a motherboard that doesn't have built in SATA.

thanx, as you can tell i'm new at this! if i use ide drives/connection will the speed be lower? current new build is amd 64 3200 in asus k8vdx that has ide and sata connections.my daughter will use it for home and home biz, so gaming speed is not the 1st priority

IDE drives are slower than SATA, yes. But if you were to convert IDE to SATA, it wouldn't help anything.

Having faster drives (and SATA is faster) will always help (not just gaming), but if you've just got IDE drives they will work just fine. Don't go buy a new SATA drive if you've got an IDE. Don't buy an IDE drive at all if you do need a new drive since SATA will be faster and cost virtually nothing more.
