    Question Maxtor 200Gb 16Mb cache HDD...Any good ???

    HELP !!! PLEASE...
I'm thinking about getting a Maxtor 200Gb 16Mb cache IDE HDD (6Y200RO or 6B200R0 ?-I've seen both advertised!).

What do you guys think about it ? How about the new Maxtor hdds ?
It has the 16Mb cache...So it should be "good", right ?
    Or should I stick to a 200Gb 8Mb Western Digital hdd ???

Currently, I have a 30Gb 2Mb Maxtor & an 80Gb 8Mb WD. My plan is to remove the 30Gb and use the 80Gb as my primary drive, then use the new 200Gb for storage etc...

Also, could I format it as a single 200Gb partition ? Or would I have to "break it up" ?

if the drives only gonna be used for storage then i would reccomend just getting the 8mb cache drive also WD is better than Maxtor so the WD drive would be a better choice.
as for partitioning it depends on the operating system/service packs and whether the motherboard supports large drives

i think it just depends on the age of the mobo anything reasonably new should support large drives. im assuming your board is pretty recent so it should, even if it doesnt then the drive should work with 2 smaller partitions

    Question Re: Maxtor 200Gb 16Mb cache HDD...Any good ???

Are Western Digital's drives still better than Maxtor's drives ??
I thought that Maxtor improved their drives ?

Also, both the WD 8mb and the Maxtor 16mb hdd's are about the same price.

The Maxtors with 16MB of cache are good, and if you're getting a big drive, you should consider one. As for the drive support, I wouldn't worry about it. SP2 will handle it, and I'd bet your motherboard will, too. If not, you can always return it, or just replace the motherboard.

Thumbs up Re: Maxtor 200Gb 16Mb cache HDD...Any good ???

I just picked up a WD 200Gb 8Mb hdd and an AMD AthlonXP 3000+ cpu !
Both parts are installed and working nicely !
I could have used it as a single, large drive, but I decided to partition it as 2 equal partitions.
Thanks for your help with this...

    Current spec:

    CPU: AMD AthlonXP 3000+
    HSF: Tt Volcano 7+ w/ AS 3
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-7VAXP
    RAM: 1Gb PC2700
    Video: ATI AIW 9700 Pro
Audio: onboard - sounds better than my SB Live!
HDD1: WD Caviar SE 80Gb JB
HDD2: WD Caviar SE 200Gb JB
    DVD: LG GSA-4120B
    Case: Antec Plus 860
    PSU: Tt Butterfly 480W
    Monitor: ViewSonic P775

One, if it's used for storage more cache would be better, because you can move larger files quicker. Two, there is no truth behind the WD is better than Maxtor, thats solely opinion. I have dealt with WD, Seagate, and Maxtor and have not had a problem with a single one of them, and from most reviews the only difference is the name and models, and Seagate offers a 5yr warranty. I would go with that 16mb cache drive if I were you, I've heard they are really nice.

Too late. I did order it, but the store I got the parts from are idiots ! I called to verify that they received the hdd, and they "checked" and said, "Yup, it's in". So I went there and they said, "Sorry, we don't have it, but we have these drives...." *******S !
Anyways, I got the WD 200Gb JB. Now both hdd's are JB's. I'm happy.
