Default SATA bootdrive with IDE slave

    Mobo: Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra
    http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=185

    Main HDD: WD360GDRTL Raptor 36gb
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=40

    Running XP home.

I am currently running the Raptor through a pci card on this mobo until i get a new mobo. I wish to keep this hdd as the bootdrive that has the OS on it.

I want to add an IDE hdd for backup/storage (it has XP on it, but i am going to wipe it clean). I cant figure out how to do this.

The problem I am having is that if i plug in the IDE hdd, my computer recognises it as the bootdrive and doesnt recognise the SATA at all. Ive tried the jumpers set to both master and slave, and ive tried it in both the IDE1 primary and secondary, as well as the IDE2 primary and secondary. The only way i can get my pc to boot up with the SATA hdd is if i remove the IDE hdd all together.

My intention is to have the PC boot up with the SATA hdd, then i will format the IDE hdd and use it as storage.

Im sure im doing something wrong, can anyone help?

    thanks

I have no experience with SATA drives but I guessing that your bios must see the SATA drive or you wouldn't be able to boot from it, with, or without the IDE drive. There should be an option in your bios that allows you to set the boot order.

I think i figured it out.

Since my pc was booting up the IDE hdd, I figured i would wipe the OS off of it. I formatted it and put an ntfs on it.

I changed the IDE drive to master and plugged it in to IDE1, while my DVD and CDRW are both on IDE2.

Since the IDE hdd didnt have an OS, it defaulted to my Raptor plugged into the host controller.

    All is working well now.

Yes that method works but you should probably still change the boot order in your bios if you want to cut down on the time it takes your system to find the operating system.
