Thread: HD noises.. Is it PS

  1. Default HD noises.. Is it PS

    Good day.

    XP pro sp 1.
40gb IBM dkstr 80gm WD Caviar and Segate 300gb SATA
    Antec true power 430watts
    Msi kt3 ultra mobo.

I was having major problems booting up into windows when i had the WD and IBM (primary) HD's. I had windows on both HD's. It would take me something like 8-15 try's for it to boot. And when trying to boot i noticed that the WD hd was making lots of clicking and partial spooling sounds. So i figured its probly going bad. I ran a utillity called "disk checker" and it said both my drives are healthy. So i ran chckdsk /f on both drives, then defraged both drives. No help. so i trashed the WD hd.

for a while things were fine.

Currently im running the IBM (primary) with my windows. and the SATA running off an adaptec SATA raid pci card. And im having problems again. It sounds like both hd's were doing it... could it be that there is somethign wrong with my power supply? Is there a utillity that i can use that will check the drives for failure??

    I would apreciate any help.

i was having those clicks on my hitachi ata133 120gb. and it would only occur on cold boot. i mean when you leave the pc shut down for a while and then turn it on. later on the drive broke but i'm sure it wasn't because of those clicks. when the drive would run for, say, 10 minutes the clicks dissapeared.

don't know if i'm in any help here..

You could always try enabling S.M.A.R.T Drive monitoring and see what it tells you. I'm pretty sure all IBM drives support the feature if you have it.

SMART is enabled on all my drives. This is a most curious problem. none of my drives have failed yet.

The IBM deskstars earned the name Deathstar for a reason. I would highly recommend you back up all data on it ASAP and it will probably take a dump pretty soon.

wow guys I dont get it. I switched out my cable and i thought it fixed the problem. Reformated and windows runs great.everything is good. and then if i leave my computer off for a day or so.. it had trouble booting. I get it to boot up when i run a chkdsk /p tho. anyone heard of a problem like this?
