Even though it was just an assumtion and not exactly the truth. Doing this would basically make the drive unusable if anything.

As for those tapes ya that is interesting. I'll read those links later today.

The object is not to obtain a servicable hard drive in that kind of circumstance, it is only necessary to recover the data which resides upon it.

I mean, would the USA really give a dongo's kidney to change the OS on Saddam Hussein's HDD - no, they just want the data therein.

lol that's true I didn't think of that. Pretty much like that kid that supposedly hacked the pentagon and was able to track the current status of every nuclear warhead that america had control of? they took his comp as so I heard and I guess found the data on the HD?

Im surprised that done of you bone head know that if you format a disk 30 times, the data is then completely gone.

thats the number of times reccomended by the governement. 30 formats and your data is gone, gone, gone !!!

but you dont need to do this unless your friend had child porn or some other stuff that will get you thrown in jail for 100 years.

one or two formats will do.

actually, if you only format 30 times, then you aren't actually changing the structure on the disk (all the 0's stay as 0's) so you can still read what was previous there.. :rolleyes2

hmmm, what about a low level format. I do not think you can do it with a IDE drive....my SCSI controller will low level format my drive.

a low level format is still, in essence, a format.

EDIT: And IDE drives can also be LLF'ed...

:) Strange thing is, the BIOS on a lot of old motherboards used to let you do it through the BIOS set up, but I haven't seen that now for years. Don't know why they stopped.
