Not everyone has a limitless budget to work with...I bought an AIW 9700 Pro a few months ago...I could have spent even more for the AIW 9800 Pro, but I decided that "last year's tech" was ok...

won't pay the performance price for tht decision, not nthat the 9700 is that bad a card, but will it stand up to the new games when they arrive, so we'll see

in my games.........16x12/32 24/7...........and, that's a dx8 benchmark...... i didn't berate the card, just said we'll see.....remember, we're only talkin' differentials here, between the 9700/9800 pro/9800xt w/ the xt being bundled w/ hl2 for a reason.........it perfers that kind of punch.........i don't have to suffer so i won't............the really big jump i believe is the next gen cards that will show themselves by xmas, meaning nv40(at least in samples) and ati's loki, so me even considering the 9800xt for hl2, will be a xmas splurge rather than an intelligent decision based upon what's on the horizon

NV40 is due next year, not christmas.

And, even with the 9800XT I doubt you will be able to play HL2 in that kind of resolution with all details maxed. You will lose too much framerate.

Even if you don't, you won't be able to run AF, as that will take an even bigger performance hit.

BTW NV40 will be the mainstream GPU....the fast one will be NV45.

Whilst this thread is not about Honda's or the Nvidia NV40 or NV45, I would like to correct you on one point. The NV40 uses a bridge and will be available in two versions, either AGP 8X or PCI Express 16X, it is certainly not a mainstream GPU. All the information I have seen up to now says that the NV45 will be same as the NV40, but a pure PCI Express card. However I would expect it to feature core and memory improvements as well. But as it's not due until September/October next year, it's a little early to tell.
