Radeon 9800 XT Launch Event (US)</center>

ATI has a way of introducing new video cards with a bang, and may have recently outdone itself. As a way to introduce to the world its Radeon 9600 XT and Radeon 9800 XT ATI picked the cold, God-forsaken place of Alcatraz Island – a place infamous as the ultimate “hell-hole” for prisoners to go to. However, ATI choose Alcatraz because it’s the perfect venue for a Half-Life 2 – like world fill with creatures and spookiness.

I’d estimate that there was an easy 300+ people at this event overall and ATI was ready for them. They opened up two areas of Alcatraz that aren’t normally open to the public – the hospital and shower room (no soap-on-a-rope needed).

For those who’ve never been to a launch even like this before, just imagine a huge room or hall filled with industry-leading professionals, tons of food, drinks, loud music, smoke and lights; not at all unlike a rock show. ATI does this just about better than anyone we’ve seen to date.

To help set the mood, they had “zombies” who’d roam around, closely followed by leather-clad women who’d whip them into place – rather campy we know, but it fit with the overall theme presented.

Interestingly PowerColor are releasing a 128MB version of the Radeon 9800 XT (412/730MHz core/memory). Let's hope that other manufacturers do so as well. I would expect this card to sell for around $399 USD.
