Radeon 9800 XT 'vs' NV38 Reference (Part 2)

AnandTech has posted Part 2 of its video card roundup which includes ATI's Radeon 9800 XT and Nvidia's NV38 reference card. It's a good read with plenty of benchmarks.

ATI & Half-Life 2
The rumors are rampant, the facts are few. Let us help you out a bit

The current ATI Radeon 9800XT and Radeon 9600XT will have a coupon in the box that looks like...this. (see attachment)

First off, note that it says "Full Version". This means "Full Version". No matter what your cousin George that works at EB told you he read on the public forums, this is a full retail version of the software. YES, there will be multiplayer support.

The coupon has a scratch off code on it that you will need to play the game, so do not lose it. If you can't download the game, you will have to pay for shipping and handling to have it sent to you. For more information directly from ATI, check out this page.

Now to add to the rumors. We are hearing that products beyond the XT lineup may be blessed with Half-Life 2 as well, but that has not been verified with ATI yet.

UPDATE: Nathan over at Tweaknews let's us know that he got a Half-Life 2 coupon in his 9600Pro AIW box. We are hearing that it might even reach further than this.

Nils Horstbink interview
    ATI's Desktop Product Manager

Veridian3: What is the main advantage, in your opinion, for users who are considering buying a ‘XT’ part over the previous generations ‘Pro’ part?

Nils Horstbink: The Radeon 9800XT is an awesome product and is certainly faster than the Radeon 9800PRO version. But the Radeon 9800PRO is also an amazing, future-proof product and no current or upcoming title is a real challenge for it. So it will be tough for consumers to decide…but at least ATI has eliminated any chance of a bad decision ;)

It is more important for those who are currently thinking about buying a new board to look at what the future will bring. ATI’s Radeon boards continue to demonstrate how easily they handle new shader intensive games.

Veridian3: We all know you can’t answer any questions on forthcoming products, but you know I have to ask this, is there anything you can tell us about products or ideas in the pipeline?

Nils Horstbink: We will certainly continue to expand our product line to the next level. But thinking about your earlier question about hardware outpacing software, I guess that the Industry needs to give ISVs some time to breathe and a stable platform to work from.Until the next major DirectX release, I would not expect dramatic changes in terms of 3D functionality or features outside of the current DX9 specifications. But as far as performance is concerned, I’d predict some quite interesting changes.

What's nice is that it's a long and arduous article comparing them to nvidia's offerings benchmarks et all

JSR, there's already been a review of the 9800 XT vs the NV38, and it also includes the NV35 and 9800 Pro. It is a much better comparison than taking ATIs new card vs Nvidias old card.

Anandtech tests only games, and no synthetic benchmarks.
