Chaos. Time will tell, but it does looking promising.

Evidently the DDR-II RAM on the 256MB 9800 PRO, which is currently running at 350MHz, is actually rated for 450MHz operation. When ATI went out to find some RAM for this product they couldn't get much in the way of DDR-II rated at 350MHz, but strangely Samsung had a fair amount of 400MHz+ DDR-II stockpiled but, now, unused so they sold it to ATI at a very attractive rate. Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB's may have a reasonable memory overclock because of this, but by the looks out the layout and the length of some of the traces I'll wager that this will not get up to these levels.

The new product that will come out is probably likely still to be a Radeon 9800 classed product, but with a newer suffix - "XT" was one name that was mentioned to me, but that is early. The speed of the RAM available to ATI could give some clues as to what they are aiming for, but some fairly major board revisions will be required for this.

    R360 Rumours

    Name: Radeon 9900 Pro
    GPU Core: R360
    Clock Speed: 420Mhz
    Man. Process: 0.15ĩ (Matured process)
    Pixel Fillrate: 3360MPixels/s
    Texel Fillrate: 3360MTexels/s
    Memory: DDRII 256MB 256bit
Clock Speed: 800Mhz (This is likely due to heat produced at higher speeds)
    Bandwidth: 25.7BG/s

Everything else about the card should remain the same as the 9800 Pro as it is essentially just a speed bump of R350 using a slightly more mature process from TSMC, remember the R350 supports DDR2 so no real changes have even been made, its just a question of accepting lower yields for a faster chip, something the ATI money men probably wont be that happy about having to do.

According to The Inquirer, ATI's R360 GPU taped out more than two weeks ago.

The only thing to remember is that DDRII runs VERY hot, much hotter than existing video RAM. Which means that either the 9900 Pro will have better cooling, or the overclocking headroom will be reduced. Better cooling sounds like the way to go obviously, but it can also result in more noise and higher cost. Something to watch for, I'll be interested in seeing how they deal with it.

Users of the existing 9800 Pro 256MB DDRII report high case temps and some artifacting problems.

Man this will be intresting.. :) Nvidia will be running just as fast as the old 5800 but on 256 bits mem..!

According to Maximum PC, there could be a surprise next month, i don't know whether it is the new ATI, or ..... whatever. But another R series, the R420 will be out in Q4 this year, twice as fast as 9800PRO (......... 1000+ fps in Quake? :lips: )

    can't wait....
