ATI's R360 to be called the Radeon 9800XT

    Radeon 9900 was an option

ATI HAS FINALLY decided what it will call the R360 and now it's no secret anymore.
ATI had two names for this technology from the beginning. One was Radeon 9900 PRO the only step left for this generation of cards, and the other the Radeon 9800XT.

From the very beginning, ATI decided to name the re-spin of the chip based on its performance. So it didn't feel it could call it the Radeon 9900 PRO if it wasn't acting as one.

At last year's Computex, Gigabyte and ATI played with the Radeon 8500XT name, clocked at 300MHz rather than the standard 275MHz. So it's built on that concept.

The Radeon 9800XT will end up at 425MHz+ for the chip and 700MHz for memory and there are likely to be DDR I and DDR II cards, it appears.

425MHz and more for a 0.15 (micron) chip seems like a real engineering challenge. Increasing the speed from 325MHz for R300 to 425MHz for R360 is also quite a challenge.

Yes, but this has been happening for ages with previous product upgrades. You will find ATI, nVidia or anyone will release a major product, in 6 months time release an upgrade to it and in that time they've got a new major product ready to release 6 months after the upgrade.

    And so the cycle goes...

Radeon 9800XT to ship with Half Life 2

    Bundle fundeal

IF YOU need a a high end card and really want to get Half Life 2 you might want to consider what's happening soon.
ATI and its partners have won an exclusive deal to ship the game with every Radeon 9800XT high end R360 card, scheduled to be introduced later this month.

For enthusiasts this is enticing, because for the same price they will get faster hardware and the game, if they want the game, for the same price.

Doom 3 is not very close to its release date, so it could be Nvidia might bundle Unreal Tournament 2004 for its upcoming NV38.

For consumers, this is of course very good news. You get to pay your money and take your choice.

The "Half Life 2 Bundle" was the subject of an auction, the bidders were ATI (successful) and Nvidia (unsuccessful).

It is claimed that the bidding reached several millions between ATI and Nvidia before the latter pulled out a large sum, we'd say for a version of HL which has a so-called "prequel".

Apparently, it's sort of the full version but not the full version which, of course, will also be sold unbundled with any kind of graphics card at all, sooner or later.

Are there any lengths the two major graphics firms won't go to show who has the bigger [that's enough Esther. Ed].
