JSR: Recently I was offered a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra for nothing but turned it down, I'm going to get a Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 XT instead. I just hope it's better than my last ATI card, which cost me $500 and lasted about 2 months.

JSR: I've had my present Hercules 3D Prophet 2 GTS since 2000. Originally I intended to change it last year for a GeForce FX 5800, but we all know what a XXXX up that was, so I waited. Personally I can't see the point buying a "bridged" Loki or NV40, because of the bandwidth restriction imposed by the AGP8X bus, which means I'll have to wait for PCI-Express motherboards to start shipping, then DDR2 modules, then an O/S that supports the new bus correctly etc, etc. This way all I have to do it upgrade my motherboard (AT7-MAX3), memory (GeIL Golden Dragon PC 3700), CPU (AMD Athlon XP 2500) and video card (Hercules 3D Prophet 9800XT). This will give me all I need for at least the next 18 months, then I'll build a 64bit system from scratch with all the goodies.

How do you know the card needs all that bandwidth?

When AGP8x was introduced, we didn't need it either, we didn't use all of its bandwidth.

Most guys will tell you that if they run theirs in 4x it runs about the same. I will be getting an NV40.

JSR: Ok M$ should have Windows XP 64 ready in Q1 2004, but what about all the other software that goes with it? I know the Athlon64 supports 32bit as well, but what's the point of having a 64 bit PC running 32 bit software. I'd rather wait, let everyone get everything right, then I'll jump on board. By then it will be goodbye BIOS, Athlon 64 "Dual Channel", PCI-Express, PCI-X, SATA2, DDR2, Longhorn should also be ready and of course an NV50 1500MHz GDDR3 512MB PCI-Express graphics card to finish it off.

JSR: There's so much new stuff coming out all the time, that's why I've slowed down with my upgrades, otherwise I could have spent an absolute fortune in return for what would be quite minor improvements by comparison. When I upgrade from my 3D Prophet 2 GTS to a 3D Prophet 9800 XT, there will be a huge difference. Alternatively I could have gone the 3D Prophet 2 GTS/3D Prophet 2 Pro/3D Prophet 3 Pro/3D Prophet 8500 Pro/3D Prophet 9700 Pro/3D Prophet 9800 Pro/3D Prophet 9800 XT route. I'm happy with my decision, after this my next card will be an NV50. But I do understand what you are saying.

No more BIOS ? Noo...It couldn't be....:woot: They've been talking about the end of the BIOS for too long now, it couldn't possibly actually happen !
