there is no sense in upgrading if you don't need to and predict you wont need it anytime soon. That way by the time the need does arrise you will be more likely to find a cheaper, and probably better, solution

AsianBatman can you explain to me just what it is that his son will not be able to do with a system like that??? Any idea what percentage of children in the world have never even seen a computer of any description ... let alone actually used one? I constantly find myself getting a bit ticked off with youngsters dissing someone elses system just because their parents are in a position to spoil them. I'm not trying to start a flame war ... just suggesting that perhaps you should realize how lucky you truely are.

It wasn't that long ago that I saw someone state that a "cheap" system for internet browsing could get away with as poor of a video card as a GF4! Good grief!! I just finished working on a PII 350 with a 2mb video card and that system was able to handle online browsing as well as any other system I've ever seen. You couldn't play most of todays games with it but it does exactly what it needs to do for the guy who owns it.

My system (in sig) has much worse specs than the one in question (1.8 celeron w/ti4200) and, although I won't say an upgrade would not be benificial, I have still not found a game or application that I can not use and be happy with the results!

Another false idea a lot of people have is that newer games will not play without DX9 video cards. My card only truely supports DX7 and yet I have played DX9 games with it. True there is some eyecandy that I miss but most new games still look great and are very playable.

O.K. .... got that out of my system for now .... rant complete.

Thanks PrairieDawg. My sons system plays all the great games, but this 5600 just sucks! I plan on getting a P4 2.4 533mhz togo with the mobo. That should be good for a while. Now just need a mid range video card. I heard the the red board 9500 card from ATI can be modded to run as a 9700? True/false

Moving away from original thread topic but I guess I'm due to apoligize as well. Congrats on earning your system AsianBatman and sorry for beaking off without knowing the facts. Guess your comment just reminded me of a lot of people who have no concept of the worth of money and the work it takes to acquire it.

What do you mean poor video card? A GeForce 4? Those cards can get 16k 3DMarks in todays systems and that isn't enough? Or did you mean something else...surely you don't mean a GF4?

What DX9 games have you played? The only one I can think of right now is Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness which uses Pixel Shader 2.0...unless I missed something that was the only one I knew of...

Also, DX9 games coming out are too advanced for older cards to handle at a playable frame rate. It isn't just the fact that it is DX9, its the fact that it is just too complex for slower cards. Even the FX5200/R9200 are considered too slow to even play DX9 games coming up, which is its main feature that suck people into buying them.

This is true - goto the rage3d site and read up there. I have a 9500pro that i changed the bios on, and can now overclock it from 270/275 to 335/290 and its stable as a rock. Dont get a 9500 though, get the pro version - its much, much better.

You cannot modify the 9500 PRO into a 9700.

The only one you can unlock the 4 pipelines to make 8 and turn it into a 9700 is the 9500 NON PRO 128MB RED PCB L SHAPED RAM CHIPS.

BTW it requires soldering so unless you're into that, just get the Pro.
