Don't buy the 256mb the 128mb is better, it runs faster and is clocked higher, can also overclock better.

not to be rude or anything but ..if u read it calfaly he always got it.

now. the 9600 256mb is ...well a little out of date if your compearin with the top of the line. right now i think the 9800xt 256mb by shafire(sp?) is the best. maybe a few years ago your friends vid card might be good...but now days its gone bad.

as for vido cards...his cards still better then mind. if you or your friends gona get a new video card...do lots of readin and find a good place for price. i found a 700 dollor videocard for 300.

i am just gona stop talkin now because i dont think you wana read a 4 page reply:blah:

I think you're a little mix up there, the 9800 XT is the king of the hill atm but the 9600 pro certainly isn't 'out of date'. It was released about the same time as the 9800 pro if I recall, which was only a few months ago. The difference being that the 9600 series is designed for peole on a realistic budget. Very few peole can afford to spend $400-500 (US) on a new video card. For the price, it is a very nice card and certainly not 'old' by anyone's standards.

Now as for the orginal question, when the 9600 pro (128/256... makes little difference in this discussion) was released it was not one of the top 3. The 9700 pro, 9800 pro, and 5900 ultra all beat it by a significant margin. I've even heard the 9500 pro is a little better, but I havn't seen any proof of that. Since then the 'XT' cards have come out and pushed it down even further. While your friend's card is not one of the absolute best, it is still a solid card.

I've gone too far and need to move on!

And if you want to be really anal, the entire nVidia Quadro series of video cards designed for rendering specialFX in movies and such coming in at like 6k a piece would blow away any of your crappy 9800xt's when it comes to actualy 3d rendering :)

P.S. - I know they suck for game performance

Then you've got the FireGL cards from ATi to match the Quadros, although I'm not sure which performs better...

It's always something 'better' out there. And if you buy the best it won't be the best no more than a few weeks/months. I've just recently upgraded to a 9800Pro and I must say it perform even better than I've expected but there is cards out there that beats it. But as it manages what I need it to do it's great, for me.. :)
