Thread: Nvidia or ATI?

I'm getting ready to build a new computer, but I can't spend a ton of money on it. I've already lined up an ASUS SiS 655TX motherboard with an Intel 2.4 c that can easily be overclocked to 3.2. I show my set up to a few people and hear that the videocard I want, PNY nVIDIA GeForce FX5200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, sucks. Well, the only other cards I can find in my price range (no more than $115 for the card) are the ATI 9200 and 9600 SE, which I know nothing about. I currently have a Nvidia Verto Geforce MMX400 64MB card in the computer I use now and it runs most programs with out too much problem. My question, should I pick one of these cards (and if so which one) or should I save my money and invest in a better card. Both options are on the table, though I would like to get my computer as quick as possible

if you're going to game, you flat out need more money. I would wait until the next gen cards launch in april, then go either 9700 or 9800

DON'T get a cheapo budget will regret it

you may want to consider getting an intel 865 or 875 chipset based motherboard insted of that SiS one if your gonna be overclocking.

im not sure but i think the ASUS P4C800 (??????) is a good motherboard

also the 9200 and 9600SE would be at best the same speed as your MX440, wait until the new cards come out and you should be able to get a 9600 Pro cheaply

And if you truly *can't* wait and *can't* get anymore money. For video cards instead of those look at the ATI 9000. It's supposed to preformce at about the speed of an nVidia Ti 4200 or 4600 you can check them out here at tomshardware at this article

Toms ins't great but it's ok.
If the stuff in glow sticks is truly toxic then why do they make so many flavors?

Thanks for the suggestions; I found a PNY nVIDIA GeForce FX5900SE for about $ it anygood? I already know my motherboard (P4S800D-E Deluxe) is good and so is my chip, but if I were to overclock, could I stay with the base fan and maybe just put some thermal paste on it, or do I need to go ahead and get an aftermarket fan (Cooler Master Aero 4 CPU Cooler?)? My case and power source already have two fans built into each of them, but i'm sure they are not the greatest fans on earth. Any suggestions?

I know how to build the thing but DAMN, I do not know what to buy!!
