    Default 9800 or 800xt on a p2.4???

Just got some unexpexted money so i can actually get the card i want to. But I have a p4 2.4, 512, 1g mem. Would i realy benefit from the x800xt or would some of the lower range cards work just as well. Im only interested in frame rates, not the eye candy.
    Thx for replyes

What is the FSB on that P4? An X800XT would be held back by any P4 2.4, but a 2.4C could take enough advantage of it to make it worth it in the long run. Otherwise, a 128MB 9800 Pro or maybe a regular GeForce 6800 would be a much wiser use of money.

The XT will kill any 9800 with any amount of memory, but your current system won't make full use of the video board. It will, however, give you at least a few years of good performance so will be ready to take off when you make your next processor upgrade.

Exactly, but for the price of a X800 XT, you could easily replace the motherboard and processor and still get a fairly good video card. That's what I would probably do in your shoes because of impatience, but getting an X800 would be better in the long run, I suppose.

the only problem is the standerd is changed, PCI express it is so if you are planning to upgrade your mobo any time in the next few years you are going to have to buy a new vid card anyway. That is why i went with the 9800 pro. Why spend more when it won't help you in the short term and it won't help you in the long term becuase it is based on old tech?

I don't know about that, but most will upgrade it way before PCI-Express becomes useful for video cards. In fact, that day is arguably so far away that it's not even worth thinking about.

Besides, a card such as a GeForce 6800 would help in the short-term and the long term. It's powerful enough to make a difference on a CPU-limited system such as this over any weaker card (even if it's not nearly as large as it should be), and it will last for over a year before it is relatively where the 9800 Pro now. That's just the regular GeForce 6800 I'm talking about. An X800 Por or XT would last even longer (although I would rather have a 6800 GT for Pixel Shader 3.0 and because they perform about as well overall, anyway).

That said, you make a valid point. This stuff is expensive, so even if you plan for upgradability, you'll find yourself replacing expensive hardware with more expensive hardware.

i have a radeon 9100 xtasy on ym crpa comp which is only 1.1 Ghz Celeron :-(, but i have enough money to get myself a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ CPU combo with motherboard(forgot name of it), i got some money left over now, should i get a Redeon 9600 All-in-Wonder or shourl i buy a Sapphire X800, i want the one that is cheap and awesome performence. Recommend me on which one.
