I thought all Dell computers with a Prescott CPU had PCI-Express?
Not from what ive seen, or they'd be even more expensive than they are now. Here in the UK at least, Dell charges a fortune for anything thats half decent.

You'd ever buy from them at all?*

*Let's just pretend there's no such thing as laptops...

Not at all... Before LGA775 had any market penetration the socket 478 Prescotts were replacing Northwoods for high-end OEM PCs, and until recently there were no LGA775 Celeron Ds. Celeron Ds are and were the CPU of choice for Dell and Gateway budget PCs, and will continue to be until either LGA775 drops in price or Intel stops production of socket 478 chipset and motherboards entirely. All Celeron Ds are Prescott, so most Dells with Prescott aren't LGA775 and therfore have no PCI-E.

Laptops? Splash out 700 for a laptop with this kind of spec: Celeron 2.4 (Northwood, 400FSB) on an 845G board with 256MB of PC100 RAM and a 20GB hard disk? Dont think so somehow...

My father purchased a laptop just like that, and now its having intermittent display and network failures. His rationale for spending more on a laptop was he didnt have space for a monitor on his desk.

Why didn't he just get an LCD? They take up less space then a laptop.

His friend from the US got him the laptop at a reduced price (the equivalent of 350, the exchange rate was 1 :1.93 USD at the time)
