Thread: What psu for an X800XL?

Default What psu for an X800XL?

I've decided on an ATI radeon x800xl AGP as my next vid card, but I know that I need a new psu to power it. I want it to act as an exhaust fan so to say, 1 fan inside the case blows heat into the psu, and the other blows it out. What would you recommend? I need it to be reliable, and not have pimp lights shining on it or other crap like that.

Any reputable power supply rated at 450w or higher should give you the power you need and give you headroom for future growth. Thermaltake makes a very stable power supply and just about any Antec unit you look at will be very reliable.

Just as a side note, I wouldn't count on the PSU to do a lot in terms of system airflow (your desire to have it used as an exhaust). From the testing I've done, the results are negligible when adding a double fan PSU to system temperatures; mainly because the power supply creates its own heat that also needs to be expelled.

Any help at all with airflow would be needed. Can you recommend any models that would do something like I described?

If you are looking to exhaust air from the system, I would suggest an ATI Silencer for the video card. It will exhaust some of the heat from the inside of hte case. If you have the room, you should cut a hole in the top of the case and mount an 80MM fan blowing out of the case. Heat rises and a fan in that location works wonders.

Is an Ultra X-connect a good choice? Is it reliable?

What would be a better choice, the Ultra X-connect or the Antec Neopower?

Antec. I haven't heard very good things about Ultra lately.

Antec it is then. This will be the first time I'll be replacing the PSU, so anything I need to know about? Any tips or guides of how to properly install it and all?
