    Question 9800 Se Bios Flash

I have a question concerning the flashing my bios of my 256 bit 128MB 9800 SE. I currently run the softmodded catylst package to unlock the other 4 pipes, but i want to flash the cards bios to a 9800pro bios. When i set my card to 380/340 there is minor dots in the cube in ati tool.It is not out of hand artifacts. I've read that the pro has tighter memory timings that will help it run at 380/340 easier than the current bios tolerates. So i am thinking that this will help delude some of the artifacts(not many).I think t has samsung 2.8ns memory but all i can see on the memory chips is "samsung 337",and then some other numbers.. I've been to techpowerup's site and dont know which bios is the right one.Is it flashable? I' hope it helps. If anyone knows this kinda stuff well please help.

P.S-Is it hard to flash a vid cards bios?

I say you should checkout the Techpowerup forums as they'll know more about what's flashable and what's not.

Flashing a video card BIOS is really easy, but if you screw up and it doesn't work, you better have a PCI video card on hand so you can flash it back.

You need to match up a bios from another card with the same memory or you run a serious risk of burning out the memory, and very quickly too. Look under the Sapphire bios list as they were one of the biggest companies to put out 9800 Pros. I have some serious doubts it will work since you get artifacts so easily. You can try but as Yawgmoth says, be prepared to either do a blind flash back or have a PCI based video card handy. I keep a 2MB PCI card around just for that reason. What shape is the memory and in what pattern? If it is perfectly square memory chips in an L shape, then you will have the best luck. If the memory chips are rectangular and in a line accross the top, you may want to consider not flashing it. I have done many 9800's but I usually flash the R360 cored pros to XT.

You really really need to figure out what memory chips are on there before you flash it. DO as much as you can to get that info and then report back here.

If you go into "Advanced Post" mode you will a little further down the page find a "Manage Attachments" button which will allow you to upload a pic from your own HDD (so long as it isn't too big). ;)

When I googled that Samsung part number it says that Vram is good for 300MHz:

    http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semi...K4D263238E.htm

Read down the list and you will see that. I am thinking that card has budget memory chips on it so be very very careful flashing it. You may just want to find a nice stable overclock and run with it instead of flashing it. I don't think it will appreciate being flashed.

Thanks Casecutter. Your right it, sounds iffy, and quite frankly I had a feeling I would screw up the flash , So I'm goiong to leave it alone. I'm thinking of getting a x1600xt with my 939 system. Do you think i should get that or do the gto2 mod? What 939 cpu would you recommend? Everyone says get opertron or something? Isn't that a server cpu? What is the best core in your opinion? Thanks man.

I'd suggest the X2 3800 and yes the Opteron is an enterprise CPU though a lot are very good overclockers but dual core is the way to go (the s939 Opterons are getting harder to find now as AMD is routing them into their major OEM partners only).
