Sounds like you are running mismatched ram for one, and that power supply isweak by any standards for your setup. You need some matching ram so that it would run dual channel, and at least a 400W quality name brand power supply to properly feed that system. Also, when was the last time you did some system maintainence? Disk cleanup, defragment and so forth. Spyware cleaners, run antivirus, all that stuff too.

What exact ram do you have? What exact power supply is it?

If you run 2 matching sticks of ram, it will switch to dual channel mode and double the bandwidth the ram runs at. You should get another 1GB stick that matches the one you already have.

Ok i have just put in my 400W power supply and i now have 2 matching 1 gigabytes of ram each. I still have 20 fps on my favourite game.

Any other ideas or is the only thing you guys can suggest a clean format?

You need to figure out if your ram is running in dual channel for one, and you may also need to do some tweaking in bios. Did you do the system maintainence stuff too? That can have a big impact on game performance, especially defragging a drive. Reinstalling is a last resort, there is little guarantee that it would help. Also, don't forget all driver updates and such. That too can drag performance down.

I will take your advice and do a clean re-format tommorow of my drive.

also, i have been told that ram has little impact on your fps anyway so i think 2 gigs is enough, whether it is running in dual or not.

What fps would you be expecting from my specs i have given you? Would you expect it to drop to 20 or is that perfectly normal... other gamers with half my specs get 80 fps on americas army operations :(

Honestly, I am surprised yo get such a drop. I would honestly expect 40FPS+, but it is hard to say exactly what the issue is. Just make sure when you reinstall you do this:

Install windows, then chipset/mobo drivers/restart/videodrivers/restart/sound drivers/ restart/ any other drivers and software. It is not a perfect system, but it helps. And make sure you download all the latest drivers to use, not the ones that came with your hardware.

Very interesting... The problem at hand involves America's Army, which could run at high settings and high res on my OCed 9200SE (which is a much worse card than the X800XT, which isn't bad at all) two years ago. I'm pretty sure an X800XT can handle the game.

Regarding actual performance, an X800XT will beat or at least tie a 6800GT in anything but a Doom 3-based game such as a Quake 4. Considering that only two games are based on Doom 3 (D3 itself and Q4) and that neither of them are very good, I'd say that's a fairly unimportant benchmark. I'd still choose a 6800GT because it will recieve better image quality in SM3.0-enabled games, but as far as actual performance goes the X800XT was never a bad card.
