this may sound retarded but i heard that u can user two psus. so if i have my 550watt just connected to my gpus and a 450 watt connected to the rest of my computer would that work.

I was thinking about this last night actually, and how you could use the voltage off one to turn the second PSU on/off.
I don't see how two PSUs would be a problem, granted the voltages won't match exactly, but that shouldn't be an issue. The hard part will be to find space in your case, they do make server cases with a spot for two(for redundancy).

If you don't mind the mess it will work. Just connect the green wire from each 20/24 pin plug together and that will trigger them to both turn on.

Make sure you have a common ground if you do it this way. If your case is metal, or if you are screwing the PSU to a metal part of the case, this will provide the needed common ground.

two psus together sounds quite cool, and also bragging rights!
actually, its strange that your old psu worked at all, considering that its recomended to have a quad-sli psu around 900w

Mostly, what they say will work and what actually does work are usually very different. Lots of times you can run an underpowered PSU. You will most likely have stability issues or other strange issues that seem unrelated. And if you don't overclock you won't notice the issues as much. THe big problem with using underpowered PSUs is that when they finally blow up, they tend to take out other parts of your system like the CPU, video cards, ram, etc... It can get quite expensive quickly. And the other problem with PSU ratings is relying on the wattage. You always want a high quality high amperage unit because they will be more efficient. Even the best PSUs are only about 80% efficient. It never amazes me that people will spend $1000+ on parts for their PC and then spend $25 on a power supply. It is like buying a Ferrari and using 4 donut spare tires on it. It will still be a very fast car, but when you blow a tire and spin off the road, there will be nothing left of it.

That one looks nice and strong. I love my Silverstone PSU. Has worked flawlessly since I installed it and noone can deny that X1800's in Crossfire overclocked suck ALOT of juice. It should work great in your PC. That is the best one that FRY's sells other than that ridiculous 1KW PC Power and Cooling and for $500 I'd want a reach around when they ring me up. OCZ is making some great new units, GamerXtreme I believe in 600W and 700W flavors that are also great for the price.
