Default startup trouble with ATI Radeon x1600

i just bought an ATI Radeon X1600 pro AGP 512mb to replace my Nvidia FX5700 VE that just broke after a year of me having it. Ive had to switch back to my onboard video card after my Nvidia broke until my ATi came. Well when i try to install the ATi card when i start my computer the screen isnt black but it shows black and white stripes sort of going vertical then colorful stripes i dont know what to do does anyone? (Ive tried disabling the onboard video card)

When you disabled the onboard video, did you also set up the BIOS to read the graphics adapter from the AGP port? Another issue may be nVidia drivers trying to run an ATI video card.

Double check applicable CMOS settings then boot into safe mode and remove any nVidia drivers. From there your machine should boot up with generic Windows supplied VGA drivers in place. Once the machine has booted, you can load up the most current ATI drivers to get the best performance possible from your new board.

Repeatedly hit the delete key when powering up and it should get you into bios.

Take the ATI card out. Power up your computer and get into bios. Disable the onboard video in bios and make sure to set it to boot up using an AGP card. Save and exit bios. Turn the PC off. Install the ATI card. Power up and boot the PC. Let me know if that helps.

For a Phoenix BIOS, it's probably under "Integrated Peripherals" in "Advanced BIOS Features".

That would make a difference. As long as it is now working, all is well.
